Before I build a 183....

Post by jaysg »

I'm pretty committed to building a 183, but before I start ordering the final parts I'd like to hear some other tones from it...maybe there are some clips I've missed?

Most of the clips/youtubes I've found, seem like OD with either PAB or mid-boost engaged. I'd like to know how the clean channel sounds with humbuckers and a stratocaster, if possible. I did find a Ceriatone 183 with a tele. It didn't really give me much of an idea of how a 183 would be for general rhythm work.

Thanks. I would guess that the rhythm track comes with the clean comping, so this is soloing on the clean channel.

I'll see if I can make you a clip of my Quinn 183 pre with the PAB and Mid boost off w/ the clean. It will be into a BM power amp with 6L6's although. IMHO the clean is just as good as the OD.

BTW If you build a 183 amp I highly suggest some NOS GE's (short gray plates, halo getter's) in all positions. I got some per recommendation from Scott Lerner (Dogears) & they sound killer in 183.

No, that's the OD side with a fairly low gain setting.

This isn't really the answer your looking for but it may be of help to someone.
I find with a 183 if yu use the jazz mode, mid boosted, Bright engaged (I use a MUCH smaller cap here.. Nothing above a 100pf. Mids brought kinda low, treble and bass to taste....not exact but reminds me more of a fender that way.

Glad you liked them. The real 183 had the JAN version of these tubes. Identical construction to the GE. Dude still has a bunch. Like $16.99 each......

I measured the ones in 183 and they all spec'ed out in the 95-102 gain area with 1650-1800 TC. In other words, decent strong tubes.

The GE shorties have a creamy mid and not as much "texture" as the Euro Mullard/Amperex/Siemens type tubes. They are a tad scooped in comparison and smoother on top. A nice compliment to the 183 EQ.

Shad, you may want that guy's info if you want any for yourself or customers.
