My "Twinwreck" Express combo build

Post by vincenz »

Hi all,

Here is my Express combo build project:

First, thanks again to all people who help me to troubleshoot and stabilize the beast.

So, here we are:

*The cab is from Mojo. This is a Fender Twin Tweed High Power with a Marhall bluesbreaker look.
*Speakers are Celestion G12M Greenback Heritage 20w made in England.
*I have designed my own chassis (bigger then a Twin stock one) to put into this combo cab. Nik from Ceriatone had made it.
*Home made back panel, with air holes at the right places.
*Chassis is firmly attached to the cab with 3 upper screws and home made steel bolts, and 2 on the back.
*And a nice custom-made control front panel ;-)

*Boards and hardware are from Ceriatone.
*Trannies, filter caps and signal caps are from RJ. I tried to match the lead dress as close as possible to Francesca's one.
*I also bought some nice tubes from Mike (KCA). NOS Siemens EL34 and I have to try out different combinations of preamp tubes.

Wow, that does look good. And what a great name/logo for that matter.

Hm, you say Nic made that chassis for you? As in special order? I am not that familiar with what he might do for someone on a custom order - is this an adapted chassis or, indeed, a special built chassis? The boards look nice, too, for that matter.

Good job, vincenz!

Nice looking cab. I like the gold and white piping and how you brought them together on the same cab. I'll bet those 20 watt greenbacks sound nice.

are 40w worth of greenbacks going to be able to handle a 35w wreck?

I suspect you'd be better running 6V6s to look after those speakers, I run two 25w greenbacks and do this.

I have tried 6V6, but I do not like them. I find they have not enough presence and definition, I prefer the relative brutality and overtones for the EL34.

Since I do not play at "full throttle", I guess my two 20w greenbacks would be able to handle the wreck power.
My current setup is: volume knob at 1H00 + Airbrake attenuator. Like this, the greenbacks are singing like Shirley Bassey under steroids, with a big amount of compression. mmmmh delicious

Looks sweet!

If that is an aluminum chassis, you may also consider adding a bracket to the PT to bolt it to the cabinet. You wouldn't want the weight of the trannie to bend your chassis. Bruce Collins made a bracket for the trannie on my tweed Super build and it makes a lot of sense when you look at the long lever arm of as great a mass as that.

Nice concept - that's gonna turn some heads for sure.

Looking forward to the clips.
