Badcat Lynx build

Post by amplifiednation »

So I have this Badcat Lynx 50watt head. The clean channel is unreal. It has nice round el34 mids with great clarity and a lot of spank. The gain channel I dont really care for. Its just overkill for my style. It has too much compression and saturation.

Would it be possible to clone just the clean channel? Im thinking I could do it pretty easily since I have the amp. Really unreal clean. I would want to try to keep the watts at 25 or less. Anyone ever play this amp?

I played a friends through a fancy Orange cab and agree that the cleans are great and pretty unique. I liked the distortion channel too but remember it always being dark with lots of gain on tap.

No I haven't been able to find one. The Lynx is like the unfound gem of the Bad Cat line. Everyone goes with the Hot Cat not knowing that the Lynx actually has more gain and a way better clean channel. No loop though, which kinda stinks because it doesn't take pedals well even though it is supposed to...or I should say its very particular with pedals.

You should at be able to get the basics if you have the amp: No. of gain stages, type of tone stack, negative feed or not, cathode bias, etc. I would also presume that any clean sound has a lot to do with the headroom of the power amp, the Lynx being 50w. I wouldn't deviate from that aspect if you don't have to.

I had a hot cat and LOVED it, except for it's utter unreliability. I'm def interested.

I just a/b'd the lynx with my rocket. Similar cleans although a bit different with el34s vs the el84s. More bass with the rocket but a little more punch with the lynx. It might not be worth the build because of the similarities. I kinda want to sell it because I can build a lot of amps for $2k but do like the tones it provides. If only I could have it all

Joe Bonamassa talks about this idea a lot. Having it all. So, as you know, he has a four head rig to entertain that notion.

Right now I am experimenting with a two head rig that uses my Dlite ( 6L6 ) and the Rocket.... sure is nice when they are overlaid.

But you can! Map that sucker out and clone it, and just keep building - figure 3 amps a year, 10 years... yikes, maybe a 12 step program is in order. I'm gonna have amps in the bathtub soon if I don't stop.

Lynx clean side sounds intriguing, if anyone does a schematic or layout please PM me a copy.

More gain than the Hot Cat??? That Lynx must be a ferocious beast then.

The gain is more saturated and more focused. The Lynx has more mid control too. Overall the Lynx blows the hot cat out of the water. It has a half power switch and a couple voicing choices. The lack of a loop is kind of a negative though. The amp is very sensitive to pedals

Here's a gut shot of the Lynx. Check out all the "matchless" parts.

This amp rocks but I think I'd rather build an ODS with the money I could get for it.
