Recommendation for 12" Speaker for 100W HRM combo?
Hi gang,
I currently use a Jensen Neodym in my 1x12" HRM combo. This amp has not seen much use and when I took it to band rehearsals the amp sound just bad at loud volumes. Plugging into my trusted 4x12 the sound was great.
The combo cabinet is a direct Dumble clone, the backplates are a bit thinner than normal.
Using a EV12L in the combo is not an option since the amp will just be too heavy to carry around for me.
Any lighter-weight suggestions as for speakers? How is the Celestion Neodym or the Jensen Tornado?
Open for any suggestions!
Thanks
Electron

Its not a Neo speaker but I recommend an Eminence Texas heat in a tuned 1x12 cab or combo. I've been using one for small gigs with my 100w Bm and and a Quinn 183' pre with great results. 150w handling, under $50 on Ebay sometimes, very focused OD tones, great headroom, light. (they sound best @ high volumes IMO)

If you want to know what the Texas Heat 12" sounds like with a 100w Dumble, here's a good example>

I read through the comments on Peter's demo again and he states it is #153, 6L6, non HRM, non Skyliner.
Wow, took five years to build.
The letter in which he informs me that he will build it for me is dated the 22nd of June 1987. The amplifier arrived here in Finland promtly after five (5) years. So I suppose it's built around 1991-1992. Greetings Peter

The goal of reduced weight limits options a lot. While I have not tried one, you should be able to find a thread here discussing the Eminence DeltaLite speaker, which is reputedly somewhat EV-ish while being very light.
Celestion G12-65s aren't very heavy, or a Scumback M75-LDHC. Sholz Sugarcone is heavier, but not as much as the EVM-12.

I don't make anything I'd pair up to a 100w head as a single 12" speaker...unless you were keeping the volume under 3. Past 4 and I imagine a significant silence, and acrid burning smell would present itself.
You're stuck with some kind of NEO magnet speaker with at least 150w of power handling, IMO. Good luck.

Good point, Jim...I assumed that he had something under 100W.

Hi,
thanks for all the help. I have decided to part with the combo cabinet (space is an issue as well).
Thanks again,

EMI Swamp Thang - IMHO better than the Texas Heat, bigger lows, smoother highs and a lot more efficient.

I'm going to have to push one to smell that - the WGS stuff smells like burning bandaids.Southbay Ampworks wrote:I don't make anything I'd pair up to a 100w head as a single 12" speaker...unless you were keeping the volume under 3. Maybe try it with the back off or try some dampening material on the back panel?

Crystal latice or vacuum, that is the question.
