So whats your Favorite tuning :)

With all the yakking about this amp and that... of all of different D styles there are, what has been your most satisfying build.

I have tried most, have several personal takeoffs that I really like. But for me they break down to ..... in order of what I like today.


1. 70's Style with 12AT7. They are just fun to play... harmonics up the whazoo. This is THE slide players amp....
2. 80's non-HRM with RF tweaks. Me likey, so do my customers.
3. 183 style. Like the feel of the non-hrm with no V1B loop.
3. 80's Style low plate skyliner non-HRM. Great with Strats
4. High plate skyline HRM. Of course a low plate front end into a High plate skyline sounds nice too.
5. Bluesmaster. Not a big fun of the basic tone, but it is a great platform for experimental HRM and non-HRM tunings.
6. Ripper. Cleans are ok, the rest sounds like a$$.
7. SSS - never built one, but have been testing the circuits, some really cool ideas in that amp. And before anyone asks, I can not share this information. Just being upfront about it.

After really disliking them for years I'm now to where my favorite is a high plate 100 watt HRM style amp. Really enjoy playing it and it works fine with strats or Pauls. Next would be the RF type circuit and then the 70's dealeo. But, I really love all the rest of them too!!

My Personal favorites in order are

1 Music Man 100w high plate Non HRM Skyliner .. No NFB V1 250k level loaded w/Fat bottle 6CA7's.. Definitely an in your face D-Tone..
1B 2nd Generation 100 w A total blast to play..Clear any room
I like both of these equally as well just depends on my mood!
3 80's High Plate Non HRM Skyliner w/6L's no LNFB V1 and 250k OD Level pot
A Classic must have amp
4 Low Plate Classic Mine has 2 KT-88's and has a wonderful clean side very nice for Strats and Buckers..
5 HRM w/ Marshall Iron and 34's..
6 Blues Master currently loaded 34's.. Don't really like the cleans in this as much but has a raw appeal about it..
7 4X6V HRM..Fast response..In OD with the 6V's pushed Sings like a frickin Bird
Am working on an ODSR and 183 I'll let you know where these rank..

Out of the amps I've owned or played locally:

1.) 183 Non-HRM Skyliner (Notes just sing with Buckers) using a 68pF cap on the master and 280pF cables in the loop with a D-lator and a 100w 6L6 pwr amp.

2.) 100w BM-HRM 6L6 (with Skyline EQ, BM PI) (no high pf cables, bright cap on master)

3.) 80's 100w Non-HRM with EL34's (Liked with Lapsteel)

4.) 100 HRM (Skyliner) with EL34's & reverb

5.) 50w HRM with KT77, + Reverb & a Buffered loop


Have yet to play a 70's style, bet they're great. Never really dug any 50w amps, I just like big fat clean headroom though.

AT7s in just V2, or both V1 and V2? I've tried it in V2 alone, and I have to say it sounded really good! Very different, but good.

V3 only. They really are lively to the touch. Not as focussed as a hi-plate non-HRM. My son says the tone is more raw.

47K / 51K with 5K trim. There is a schematic in the files section. I "think" it is marked #40.

So far I am digging the new 100w high plate, Skyline, ODS.

If I was adventurous like I was with my D'lite I would be throwing all kinds of parts at it just to see what it does but I am getting complacent in my old age.

I would like to build a #40 50w combo next.

Interesting thread, perhaps building the Bluesmaster wasn't such a good idea.

BTW I tried substituting a 12AT7 in the PI for the Bluesmaster, okay for clean stuff, awful for distorted tones.
