Re: Chassis thoughts
I'm not sure - Natchkins chassis are lip mounted this is dumble correct mounted via bottom plate on the sides. - who know's if it's correct spacing for the fender style straps?
i'm pretty sure if you want it to say "Dumble" your going to have to buy off shore.

Speaking for CE Pedals chassis, while we're listening to remarks about the empty logo space, you are correct that we have no plans of producing a chassis that says "Dumble".selloutrr wrote:I'm not sure - Natchkins chassis are lip mounted this is dumble correct mounted via bottom plate on the sides. - who know's if it's correct spacing for the fender style straps?

I don't understand your point about 'dumble correct mounted via bottom plate'. What's dumble correct about that? Here's a real Dumble chassis (#199). Notice the mounting points.

I agree a person can just add their own logo in that blank spot easily.
The mounting in the CE chassis seem very good to me.

Re: Chassis thoughts
The purpose of my post was to see what people used and liked/disliked about a chassis.
I have stated many times I think the "overdrive special" logo should be included on the chassis. My reasons for this are, firstly it is a hassle to make your own logo and this is a skill I don't possess but I can use a soldering iron and fault find.
I have seen one CE chassis with it's own logo and to be frank it was a really bad looking logo. I think it should considered that this chassis will be used to make a Dumble amp and not a Marshall or Fender amp, so why not call a spade a spade?
I think the average builder wants to buy a good looking and good quality chassis where the boards will fit, the transformers will fit and the only hassle is which version to build. Mojo makes chrome tweed chassis while Ceriatone makes a black tweed chassis. Give me the chrome chassis every time!

And ......... in the the "dark times" starting from when Brandon stopped selling his chassis to when Mark and Brian started selling, such a chassis was unavailable. I looked for over a year for a chassis.
I'm just happy that there are so many chioces and its great to see so many amps being made.
I while back there was a thread in the "for sale" section where they were trying to get enough guys together to order up some "correct" 70s style chassis from the guy in Thailand. All they needed was 12 orders on order to get a custom run. After MONTHS of debate over screw size and fonts everyone walked away.
As soon as you put a name on the chassis you invite such behavior.
IF having a name / logo is so important why not just get a face plate made?
Eric
Re: Chassis thoughts
Eric I agree 100%. Hey, I was part of that thread and I backed away after the trival stuff was being nickpicked to death. The font discussion alone was dragged on for almost two months.dreric wrote:I agree!Mark wrote:I think the average builder wants to buy a good looking and good quality chassis where the boards will fit, the transformers will fit and the only hassle is which version to build.

Personally, I don't care about the lack of a logo on the CE chassis if I can get a quality chassis, which they are. I don't plan on entering the amp into a beauty contest, nor sit with it in front of a mirror in my underwear with a woody drooling over the look of it.
The nice thing about a free market society is that there are options if you really want to make things happen. If you really don't like what's currently available, step off the porch and have your own discrete product made to your liking.
Mark/Brian..........how about a "Super Sized" silver chassis with reverb or a loop?

Hopefully it's not covered in suede and if is, hopefully it's treated with Scotchguard.........dreric wrote:.................dang, I'm busted.ToneMerc wrote:I don't plan on entering the amp into a beauty contest, nor sit with it in front of a mirror in my underwear with a woody drooling over the look of it.TM

Re: Chassis thoughts
Okay here are some of my efforts at front panels.
I spent a lot of time working out what would be effective and not cost the earth.
Immediately the best option silk screening/paint was out. I looked into water slide decals, the brushed finish and being a black panel ruled that out.
Laser etching was another option, but once it is done it is done, mistakes can't be rectified.
What you are looking at is a big sticker, it looks okay, but is delicate.
A silk screened/ two pack painted chassis have been ideal. Which is why I'm so forward with my views. I don't want to suffer again!

That looks great Mark.
Is that a 2U or double width rack enclosure?

Re: Chassis thoughts
Thanks Tom, it is 2U high. It could never be mistaken for a real Dumbleator, the power transformer was the factor behind making it 2U high.
The front and rear panels were the longest part of the build, which is crazy.

Re: Chassis thoughts
Mark in Oz, I filled that blank space in the CE chassis with this. I think it looks good!

Re: Chassis thoughts
I tried to make the chassis order work. I've noticed the problem with inviting input from fellow builders is the first thing they want to do it stop reading the post and start suggesting modifications to fit whatever amp they are trying to build. It took weeks to figure out the size of the Iron holes. and who knows how long before the font was just given up on. I was probably the first to lose interest after a month of "period correct" being anything but correct. I gave up.ToneMerc wrote:Eric I agree 100%. I wanted a period correct chassis, at the time I was given the opertunity to build a clone with access to a real dumble, I felt if I was going to take the time to make it sound right, it also look the part.
What I find funny is how many people talk down about the use of logo's in a public setting , yet many of the same people have sent me PM's asking about them in private.

Re: Chassis thoughts
I think Brandon's chassis are the ideal design to submit to a competent sheet metal fabricator. I was lucky to score one. The damn thing is I'd have
to transfer all of the details as an orthometric drawing in order to get bids for a small run.
My point is Brandon left nothing to chance with his product which to me have
all the earmarks of bulletproofed & roadworthy foundations a hobbyist
can be proud to host his hot rubber monkey aspirations within.
I agree, what's the point of getting Alexander's barbed wire thong in a double jock lock when your hard work is festooned with his marque? Even imitating HAD's font for your silk screener's artwork seems illogical after one
has done the necessary tweaking to finalization without so much as HAD buying you a cup of coffee or routing some heater leads.
Time would be better spent creating a logo that is solely yours to underscore being rightfully proud of your accomplishment. This avoids the uncomfortable 'splainin' if one chose to sell it down the road.
