A hell of a markup on those Mercury's.

Hey I know they are high quality. It's just that they inflate the price because of the name.

That web page certainly doesn't make me interested. Who are they? Who are their customers? What do they actually make? How much does it cost? None of those questions are actually answered.

Hi

Mercury Magnetics have a 10 year warranty and allow one to try a transformer and switch it for another (if the leads have not been cut) after auditioning the transformer. I have used MM transformers at customer requests (insistence) of for transformers in builds where I offer a 10 year warranty.

If building a clone of a specific year, the variety available is the best one can find.

The popularity with builders can be attributed to MM advertising, perceived value by players, and an as a marketing tool by some builders. (All American components, Sozo Handmade Caps, Allen Bradley CC resistors, MM transformers, etc).

Magnetic Components was the OEM supplier to Fender for the Super 60 210, and possibly other products, but does not advertise, much if at all. I discovered MC after I purchased a transformer which had UL taps from Triode on Ebay.

Magnetic Components warranty isn't as long (6 months?) and has less variety to choose from, however, MC makes excellent transformers at a sensible price. Also made in the US.

The question is Paper (MC) or Plastic (MM)?

I haven't tried Heyboer as when I checked out their website years back, it was and is not very informative. Drop a line (email) about a specific transformer for a price.

Weber carries some of the line with prices

https://taweber.powweb.com/store/heyboer/hy_order.htm

Hammond Transformers sells drop-in replacement transformers for Fender (Marshall and Vox, too) which are very well made I am told, but to date I haven't used one of their products.

I use Hammond's Classic transformers for most builds (OEM to Garnet Amps back in the day and Traynor, too), the output transformers are bigger, and some of their Power Transformers are available with higher 6.3V filament windings (some up to 8 amps) than generally is available. I haven't used the OT in a Dumble clone yet.

Fender offers replacement Iron at Fender prices (Laughs).

MM and Fender hold the cards close to their chest as to specifications for the most part.

MC & Hammond are transparent as to information on PT and OT, MM and Fender are not.

Best Regards,

steve

He also advise I'd go with the Mercury Magnetics transformer. I guess my question now is where do I go to get the best price? Thanks all for help!

Dave
Hi Dave,

The last time I checked, MM gives a discount after the 10th cumulative purchased Transformer (either one or more over time) directly purchased from MM if you have a commercial resale number (a business). Otherwise it is strictly retail prices.

The principal winder for the company made the transformers for Matchless (according to Matchless co-founder Rick Perrotta).

"

18W style 18W upgrade 5E3 Tweed upgrade JTM 45 upgrade JCM 900 upgrade Tweed Deluxe

Marshall Fender VOX Boutique transformer Boutique guitar amp transformers drop in upgrade

transformers Tube amplifier transformers Power transformers output transformers power

transformer output transformer Valve amplifier amplifiers Guitar tube amplifier

Guitar valve amplifier KT88 KT77 KT66 JTM45 Plexi50 Tweed Deluxe

amplifier transformer transformers 6L6 6V6 6V6GT EL84 EL34......"

Primarily they take specifications and make custom builds as well as the above. My same complaint against Heyboer, No prices.

Surely you don't expect a company that builds to order to list the price of the hundreds of models of transformers that they make.

If one is really serious then email or call and ask.

Reasons why I like Heyboer

1. Special winds are welcome, even if it's only one piece.
2. Most special winds are shipped inside of 2.5 weeks.I've gotten some as quick as 10 days.
3. Great product verses cost, prices are very resonable.

I don't want to pay for fancy marketing or paint jobs or the quirky price structure that subsidizes it.

Why is the Heyboer Twin Reverb output transformer only listed at 80 watts?

Woody and Bob at TDS made a custom 18w Marshall transformer set for me.

Very good iron the old Marshall sings nicely and love the tremolo.

Heyboer winds 5 different Twin output transformers that I can recall right off the top of my head. A Blackface Twin and the first gen SF Twins were only 85 watts RMS.
