which coupling caps make the most difference in tone?

Post by pula58 »

I have a blackface-style build

see post:

Most of the coupling caps are Xicon MDD's. I have a bunch of Mallory 150's and also "PS" series orange caps.

In what circuit locations do think I would hear the most difference by changing capacitor types?[/url]

All of them. Use Sozo!

If you were to only change two capacitors, change the coupling caps coming off of the PI plates. Those are seeing the largest voltage swing of any signal capacitors, and hence will be subject to the most "nonlinear" behavior.

Personally I prefer intelligent, deliberate, predictable, and measurable circuit design changes over the mojo factor of particular components. So I'm not really into the whole tone cap thing. But like I said, if you want to hear a difference, the PI caps are where you should look.

Amen, I like good quality stable components that are reliable..

Hence why I use Mica and Polypropylene Film/Foil for all coupling purposes.

Not particularly fussed about brand but the LCR PC/HV/S/WF and SBE 715p

work perfectly well without failure.

the Pi input cap and the PI caps (not indirect input - the .1)
also, the coupling caps after the first gainstages are important. the big caps in the tone stack is a little less important typically
