New 50 watt build

Post by 67plexi »

Started out with 6550A power transformer runs ice cold.
Next KT88 originally intended to use GEC KT66 tried that next.
Settled on 6L6gc sounded the best on this build.
This little 50 watt amp is light weight and sustains forever on the bench test speaker.
Now I need to build the combo cabinet. Have a head box for now.

Thanks to all, Steve. :D

Nice looking! Is that a CE chassis?

It does look wonderful! Are you using RG-178 for coax?

Tony, Bob, Thank you.

The coax is some mil-spec silver ( ag) 50 ohm impedance clear Teflon.

Steve - just finished a 50W build myself (a 'pedestrian' low plate, Skyliner, nonHRM, 6L6 configuration). I'm digging these silver knobs though!

Steve

Great looking build. You keep turning these things out so fast I'm having trouble keeping up. Must be cold up there!

It is a nice looking build, and I'm sure it is a great sounding amp, but from cosmetic point of view it does need Super Overdrive logo or something similar to cover the bare patch. A bit of an eyesore really.

I would have thought the hysteria around the "D" name would have died away by now.

Back to the issue, very nice amp! :D
Yours Sincerely

Yes, I have been trying to figure out what to put in that blank space myself.

I have a black CE chassis.

It is kind of conspicuous.

The method of putting something there is also of some concern.

Something else I wish it had was the standby switch up front ala Two Rock, but I know the guys were striving to keep it Dumble.

I have a couple logo ideas, I just need to figure out how to transfer it to the chassis.

Any ideas? A decal is out because of the rough powder coat.

Let’s just say the 50 is light in the loafers next to the 100 watt.

I was playing around with names for a logo; my dog Jaxon dropped the J (Axon)

What a cool name for a guitar amp did a search it’s taken to bad. Oh well.

The preamp sounds great but the power amp breaks up to early for me.

The 50 will soon be a 100 watt. The never ending Quest.

Steve.

Maybe this is a topic for a different thread, but I've often wondered whether it is the wattage that makes the difference, or the tube count?

The wattage or tube count is a question I've asked myself too.

I have stuck four unmatched 6V6's into a D'Lite and I didn't hear any great changes other than the difference in tone expected between 6L6's and 6V6's. Normster has said said four 6V6's sound bigger than two 6L6's, so who knows?

More listening is required by myself.

I'd like to see the Super Overdrive Special added to the chassis. I don't want "made by Dumble" as that would be misrepresentation and ratio of the lettering doesn't have to be the same as a Dumble, but it does have to look good. Presently the omission doesn't look good and should be addressed. That's my two cents as a consumer.

How do these chassis' compare to Nik's chassis?

Nik's chassis are well presented, Ceriatone is successful as he's married a low price point with a reasonable level of quality.

The R&D is another issue. Still a lot of people have built amps they might not have otherwise built?

Oh well?
Yours Sincerely
