Salvage (RE-)build.Soundin good!
I just replaced the 10watt 300 ohm resistor in the PS with a choke.Unbelievable difference.Love it.Just wanted to share that.
This used to be a Carvin Xamp.Want to drive the 5band eq with some tubes.I have an extra socket!
My second build.Quite happy with it.Mid boost is a little muddy and pops when switched but im tone tweakin first.
Amazing what you can do with junk just layin around!

Nice conversion Gary.
On your mid boost did you put a 4.7M resistor from the switch to ground?
That is to prevent popping.

Tweak on! Looks good. Wish I had an extra choke floatin' around. Sure makes a difference.

yep I need to check my connection on that cause its sure making a noise when you flip the switchStructo wrote:Nice conversion Gary.

Gary, I know it's hard to describe subjective things, but I haven't heard much about the change in feel/tone of changing from resistor to choke. Can you tell your experience?gary sanders wrote:I just replaced the 10watt 300 ohm resistor in the PS with a choke.Unbelievable difference.

Looks good Gary, how are your plate voltages?

The power end is dead on.A little high on the preamp but I put some crap tubes in for the first launch,I have a sweet old GE for #1 and a couple other goodies. My friend whose father was a radio tech since the 50s hooked me up on some good ones.He has a caddy full of good old tubes. He also gave me the NOS orange drops.Havent put the good ones in yet.BobW wrote:Looks good Gary, how are your plate voltages?
Going to tweak the V2 snubbers, have a 300 on A and a 500 on B and I think the 500 is a bit much.Have a few caps to rotate cause I put the foil end backwards.Theres just a slight muddiness to it but not bad,but Im using the same caps and some resistors I had in it last time so maybe that will fix it when i do a little tweakin
I have a 500k bass pot and i may drop that to a 250k.
And I may be wrong but I saw on here, there was a discussion that mentioned the V2b grid resistor was changed,to like 120k or 100k or something.Id like to get a little more gain on me OD.I have an extra socket so I may just throw in another stage like on the X100b or 5150 schematic.

Youre right its hard to describe.I guess my hands just get along better with this amp with a choke in it.Maybe it could be the difference it made in the power R string, but all i know is thats the only thing I changed and it just sounds better, somehow it just seems to be more.....(thinking of a description)....alive.....hope that makes sense.Like the way your pick hand can accent a note or a chord.I should have made an audio clip before. When I do my EL34 ODS head I will do that just for fun and see if recorded audio can show the difference.greiswig wrote:Gary, I know it's hard to describe subjective things, but I haven't heard much about the change in feel/tone of changing from resistor to choke. Did I mention it goes to 11?...........

Did you end up changing the grid resistor on V1b?
What did you use on V2b?
