Buying parts for a D build?

Post by Mark »

I was wondering if a few of you could inform me as to who sells components for a D build at a good price and is reliable?

I should point out that I live in Australia, so they will have to send them to me.

As you'd expect 715 Orange drops are easily available.
Yours Sincerely

I deal with Mouser.com tubesandmore.com and apexjr.com mostly. I don't know who ships internationally.

You will want the 6PS orange drops which are polyester for the Dumble.

Yes and shipping rates from the US to Australia are crazy right now. Up over 2x in the past year.

Mark you might want to check with Nik at Ceriatone, he may be able to source you the capacitors that you need (6PS) for the build. And it would probably be cheaper than trying to buy them from Antique electronics here in the US.

For transformer and such, I would recommend finding a silver face Fender or maybe even an old Peavey to rob parts off of. Buying new from the US I would say Heyboer, Magnetic Components or Mercury Magnetics. But, the shipping will be more than the cost of the transformers.

I should point out buying from the US is now great for us as the Aus and US dollar are nearly one for one.

I will need PS caps and I will need the Dale RN (or what ever they are resistors), pots and relays.

Regarding iron I have an old Boogie SOB amp. I will use the iron from that. It is a 50 watt amp and I will have to try and determine if the power transformer could handle being converted to a 100 watt amp, but that is later on.

Nik may be of assistance as the postage might be a bit less.

If you end up needing any boards for your build, PM or email me with your other needs. I have plenty of stock on hand of RN65, 6PS, pots and other D-Clone specific parts. I'll pass them on at the normal Mouser prices so hopefully you could save on shipping from multiple sources.

Mark,

Mouser is good for international sales. If your exchange rate is good ATM, I would go with Mouser because a) they have most of the parts (except the 6PS caps) and b) you'll be able to create a 'benchmark build' using identical parts to many of the seasoned pros, so that way you'll know that it should be possible to get within sight of a 'real deal'.

The only real downside is that you will probably get hit with import taxes. ouch

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Hi Mark
Try these places

http://australia.rs-online.com/web/?cm_ ... ics_Phrase

http://www.direct-components.com/

http://evatco.com.au/hamptprice.htm

and the ever popular EBay

And if you do buy Internationaly there is no import tax unless it is over $1000 in value and I think electronic parts are exempt from tax.
I didn't pay any import taxes on either Ceriatone Amps that I bought and one came fully assembled.

Cheers

Mark. FWIW, I've converted/rebuilt 3 SOB's to dumbly deals now and the OT's just have a prominent, tone to them that I don't care for. They never get rich and fat, full sounding like say a baseman trainee. They have a metallic, almost thin sound. That's not a very good description but the sound they make is distinctive. Just thinking about it, might have something to do with the steel chassis, I don't know?

Thanks for all the replies, very helpful.

Dear TDS

I recall you initially really liking the Boogie's with the HAD makeover. What changed that for you?

Have you tried the SOB's with a different output transformer?

I'm wondering if the power transformer could handle doubling the power?

Why do you think the steel chassis makes a difference?

I think aluminum is easier to work with and cheaper than stainless steel. I can't say I've built two identical amps with different chassis materials so I have no real experience to form an opinion.

Look forward to your reply.
Yours Sincerely

Memory leak here, but either Mouser or Newark are attached to s popular UK vendor (anyone?) that may have stock and presence in OZ.

Big help, I know.

Mark, the amps sound fine. I'm just sharing my experience after doing three of these. If you have nothing to compare to you may not notice anything. Not a big deal, just a certain artifact to the sound that I would just as soon wasn't there. All three of the conversions I did were different circuits as well.
