Grounding for the least hum

Post by jcat5503 »

I'm a curious about this

What's the "best" way to do grounds to ensure minimal hum?

Cheers!

I do not think there is "the one answer" to your question.

What circuit are you implementing?
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

According to Morgan Jones, "Signal follows earth (ground)." In his book "Building Valve Amplifiers" he briefly discusses that the grounding scheme pretty much follows the amp layout. If you use star grounding, the amp tends to be layed out around the star ground. If you use bus grounding, the amp layout tends to be long and narrow. For what it's worth, I typically use a 14AWG bus bar grounded close to the input jack. All preamp stages go to the bus. Preamp filter caps ground to the same ground point as the bus. Mains (plates and screens, bias) filter caps ground closer to the PT. Works for me but others may have better layouts.
