Best caps for Rocket build (not electrolytic)

Post by jcat5503 »

Ordering parts and I'm just trying to get some opinions!

I know this is a very subjective topic

I've had great luck with Mallory 150's.

Suggestions?

Cheers!

I have the CDE and Panasonic coupling caps that are rumored to be correct, but I have not actually built with them myself yet. I think it was Paulster over across the pond that suggested the Sozo's as a great Rocket cap and I think it's Blind Lemon over in Tulsa that likes the Mallory 150's in the Rocket.

I have used the 150's and Sozos in a Rocket build and I like them both very well. I have also used Sprague Orange Drops and cannot say anything bad about them either. If you dig around on some of the old posts, one of our founding fathers actually mentions that he tracked down the lineage of the CDE Orange Drops and discovered that both the CDE and the Spragues Orange Drops were the same cap made at the same plant... dunno if that is true but the resemblance might be convincing.

looking forward to what you learn,

rj

My friends have said they really like my Reverb rocket with KT66 the best and I used 6PS caps on this one. See attached picture. The amp looks like hell but plays great. Guess I could get it a purdy faceplate.

The master pot is actually a PI voltage control works very well on this amp.

There are many ways to skin the Rocket that is for sure.

I used US-made NOS PIO's in my build and while I don't have other Rocket's to compare it to, it's a great sounding (and looking) amp. I haven't gotten around to posting a build thread yet but will do so soon. This is the first build that I used the gold standoffs on (they had little Teflon holders that I pull off and keep aside). Also note the stacked 24.9 Ohm resistors and .033uF tonestack caps. I have a (bad?) habit of using what I have on hand, but you can't argue with the results.. Here's a quick gutshot:

wow that Reverb Rocket looks cool man!

I may have to take a stab at one of those after my current build

At this point i'm leaning towards 150's or Mojo Dijon's because they available and priced well

Any one had good luck with the Mojo Dijon caps? I know Top Hat uses them, and they seem to be doing pretty well

I was going to take a chance on the Jupiter's, but AES was out of many of the values I need

may just go with the Mallory's, or even Sozo's

I can personally testify that Blind Lemon's rockets with the mallory 150's sound GREAT! I think he uses them in other amps as well and they all sound great. I'm especially fond of his 18 watt jcm... 8)

I had some leftover sozo's (the mustard standard ones) and used them on mine with great success...especially after they were burned in. I've heard that the bluemolded ones sound especially amazing in the rocket. No personal experience with these, though.
