6V6 HRM

Post by dcribbs1412 »

Used a Deluxe Reverb PT and OT I had
first time cutting/drilling a blank chassis(fun but a PITA)
decided to skip the builtin loop for now...I may try it later
kinda proud of this one(sorta scratch build and all)
excited it worked on start-up (after finding I missed a ground :))

440v on plates(used zeners originally 460V)
309V V3
207V V2
201V V1
will be tweaking HRM settings(hopefully I'll have a chance to crank it)
and trying good tubes, adding foot switch
maybe mid boost/relay not sure

Thanks go out to the usual suspects...
special thanks to talbany for the knowledge, time and explanations
of all my questions ......I have learned much on this build
Thanks to all for sharing knowledge and allowing
guys like me to enjoy this hobby(sorry to get sappy...
its almost noon and I'm gettin a beer)

Peace

Darin

Looks good. Nice work.

Hopefully you have enough length on the wires to scoot them over.....where the loop circuit will go.
Looking forward to hearing the tones.

That's a tight build.

Does it make noise yet? :D

I can't remember is this your first Dumble amp?

Nice work Darin. 440v on the plates is pretty high for 6v6. Assuming you are useing JJ's!!! You might consider cathode biasing if you want your valves to last a little longer. Nice work all the same! :D

I did a similar build almost a year ago. Used an old (never used) Mojo Deluxe Reverb PT. I ended up w/ about 470 on the plates. Yes, I'm using JJs. Gigged it pretty good this year (uh, last year) with no issues.

Thanks guys
and Happy New Year

I will probably rewire if I do the loop
thinking about an external...
2nd D'style build Tom...haven't really tested a lot but it seems very loud for a 22 watt
Yes...JJ's are tough tubes had 460v on plates at start-up...
mlp-mx6 i remember your build...it got me thinking about using the DR
iron for a D style...I'm using Magnetic Components PT and OT for this
I haven't had a chance to play it much yet...will be trying to break it in
the next few weeks
I just ordered the PT and boards from jborders5
for a 100 watter...looking at a 6V6 rocket or express style next or
maybe a Plexi...
again thanks for the comments

Peace

I have 2 6V6 Dumbles, one has 4x6V6. To my ears these amps sound great. The 2x6V6 is great for practices because you can crank it and not kill. I use an external loop with the 2x6V6, the 4x6V6 has a built in loop and reverb.

Nice build. I hope you can post some clips.

Thanks Bob
I referenced your Deluxe Chassis layout when I was looking
at adding a internal loop. Still may add later when I can wrap my head around how to do it...trying to get a space to get some clips
family complains about volume...
Thanks for sharing

Bob-I - I agree, the mid-focus of the Dumble tone goes well with the mid-focus of 6V6s. The low-end girth of the bigger-bottle tubes is missing, but the tone sits REALLY well in the mix, especially live.

dcribbs1412 - When I've done built-in D'lators I've used a lot of actual point-to-point around the socket and pots using terminal strips. It's pretty easy to secure a couple terminal strips using the screws that also mount the tube socket. The most important things are 1) to have a dedicated power supply node for the loop tube, and 2) ground carefully. I've run a separate ground lead to the input ground point, and I've grounded to the common preamp ground point. Both worked well.

I have a couple Dumble-type amps that don't have the built-in loop and they're definitely missing something important, especially in the note attack. They just don't *feel* as good. I need to build a standalone D'lator. Perhaps the C'tone kit is the ticket.
