1/12 closed back Cab for Dumble??

Post by Mr Dumble »

:?: Anyone have any experience with a 1/12 closed back cab and Dumble/style amps? My fave cab is a 4/12 closed back Mesa cab with G12H30 Annivs. at this point, and am trying to get as close to that tone with a 1/12 as I can. I really dig the extra tightness in the bottom that the closed back lends to Dumble amps. Any ideas? I am probably going to be using an old JBL speaker. Thanks for any and all help! :)

I have a Boogafunk "wide" (20") TL806 1x12 with an old EV12L in it. Sounds great with my D-type amps, nice and tight as you say, about as much fun as you can have in a 1x12 I would guess.

I'm going to change out the EV to a Fane Studio 12L as soon their distributor has them back in stock. The EV has hash type artifacts ("fizz")which are quite noticeable thru a Dumble, and I'm told the Fane is the EV sound without the "fizz".

But that cabinet is A1!

I'd love to hear you guys opinions on some of the inexpensive new 1x12 cabs coming out. I test a lot of my amps though Jet City stuff up at a local music store (the 2x12 has a dark voicing that I love) and play my Express through an Egnater Rebel 1x12. Good sounding stuff for the price and in some cases these sound better than other newer name brand stuff (Blender, Harshall, etc..) IMO. Anybody play their Dumbles through the new stuff?

One of the best sounding cabs I have today is a 2x12 I bought from ebay with "Steel Sound" on the handle, and a WGS V30 and G12H types. The entire setup cost me less than $150 and it sounds great.

This can be a crapshoot though. I bought a Lopo 1x12 from ebay also and I tried at least 6-7 different speakers in it, none sounded good so I sold it. Anyone want a Lopo 1x15?

I see cabs like this http://cgi.ebay.com/G212ST-E-Dual-12-Em ... 3a6151db1a on ebay all the time too.

Hey thanks fopr the fast replys and ideas! I just got an email from Shad however, and I totally forgot I ordered an empty 1/12 Combo chasis along with the amp head. I will be dropping the JBL in and giving that a try. We will see what happens! Thanks again, and happy New year to everyone! :D Any other ideas would still be cool to post, as I may want to go with a seperate Head-1/12 cab depending on how the combo chasis sounds.

I tend to not care for the JBL sound, especially with the metal dust cap speakers. Makes the highs too shrill IMO, although I guess that might play very well with the smoothness of Dumble amps. Not for "wide open" high gain amps though.

Search the Dumble Discussion forum for "Dumble 1-12 closed back cabinet"
The cabinet I built first had a JBL D120 but now has an EV speaker (which I like better). I'm very please with the bass quality from this enclosure. It has received high marks from other players and producers (along with the OTS head) in live performance and studio sessions.

I know the JBL 120 had problems, but if you are open to a 15", the JBL E130 has performed wonderfully for me.

Yes it has the aluminum dust cap, but is not real beamy, and it is smooth. Unlike the EV. I have a 2x15 ported bass cab with two E130s which I absolutely love.

In a single ported cab TL606 type one should be really something. They are heavy though, 22 lbs each! Rated 150W RMS.

I used JBLs D120's in my Twin back in the 70's when PA's couldn't handle the entire band and you had to project. There was no better clean tone possible than a Twin with JBLs but overdriven they were a problem. I could get a great tone, but the big voice coils were unstable and you'd get rubs frequently. Back then re-cones were cheep so I'd get them done often and keep a spare around, but it got to be a pain so I went to EVMs. I liked the big bottom end and smooth highs of the JBL and EVM came a close 2nd.

I still have my spare D120 with a voice coil rub out in the garage. I've been tempted to get it re-coned but the cost is too high and I'd be concerned about blowing it again. :(
