A New Rocket-ish build

Post by rawnster »

Here’s a project I just finished yesterday. It’s basically a rocket circuit with subtle tweaks/changes. Primarily due to the terminal strips, this was a pain in the butt to layout and build. I don’t think I’ll ever use terminal strips again. Kudos to those who use them. I want my eyelets back!

The chassis is a Princeton reverb, for which will be installed in a small 1x12 combo cab. Placing the trannies on the outskirts of the chassis was necessary in order not to bump into the speaker. This forced me to rethink the entire layout. I know it’s not a great layout; in fact it’s probably breaking lots of rules. The filter-caps should be closer to their intended fed plates. I could have simply placed them on the terminal strip where they were feeding filtered DC. Yet, I couldn’t get them to lay down and install smoothly, as well as not standing too high above the chassis. And thus I left them where you see them.

After all of the layout frustrations and uncertainties, I fired it up yesterday; and to my surprise, it sounded quite good. There’s lots of chime and a huge amount of hairy gain once it’s cranked past 9 oclock. All of the voltages fall within the normal Rocket parameters. It’s also a little on the bassy side tonally. It’s got to be that Mercury Magnetic OT. It sounds great, but it’s definitely thicker sounding the Heyboers or Pacifics I’ve used on other Rocket builds. Finally, there’s a touch of hum; and I’m sure it’s due to my layout blunders. I’ll chop stick around a bit tonight and see if I can limit some of it. It’s really not that bad, just a subtle hum.

Anyway, there you go….. Critique away! :)

Looks great Rawnster,

Glad you got that finished. :D

I'll check out the pictures closer tonight to see how you wired things.

I've owned several Tophats and liked them all. Brian Gerhardt, or whoever wires his amps, does a great job...very neat and tidy. And you called it, Norm. I was going for more of a Tophat/Hiwatt layout.

Nah, it's for a dude in soCal. I can't afford to build these for myself.

That does look sharp, Rawnster! I've always marveled at that layout style, with everything filed in rows. And hey, with the transformers spread out like that it'll be a well-balanced load.

Looks secksi in there! I love the terminal strip build too. I've done a few builds with PTP and/or terminal strips and have to agree that they are a PITA when compared to turret builds. The nice thing is all of the wires that are usually under the board are now visible and easy to tweak as needed. But at the same time, most amps where small lead dress tweaks change the sound aren't build on terminal strips! Anywho nice looking build for sure.

Ron,

Very nicely done. Did you ground the bias of V1 to the input jack ground? That reduces the low level hum in that section by doing that.

Thanks Mark.

No, I grounded the input jack at the input jack hole with a burr ground washer. The V1 filterstage and cathodes are grounded using a "star-type" connection, using a ground bar that's connected right at that preamp section. Hope that makes sense. :) Should be able to see the ground buss wire on the far right side of the 3rd picture. Your way is probably better.
