Eric,
Are you using the newer version of the EVM? The EVM 12L Classic? (200w)

If you are I was wondering if you experience any artifacts in the top end of the tone?
Almost a brittleness or hash that rides on top of the note as it decays.

I am running a pair of EVM's in an open back cab.
I love how they sound but that top end thing is bugging me.

Try tweaking some of the top end out of your amp, e.g. by increasing the od2 snubber to something like 800pf or put a 500pf across the OD master. Even better replace your OD master pot with a push/pull pot and put the 500pf cap on the pot switch, which will make it easier to use various speakers.

Hi Tom,
I had old EV in my Mesa Mark III extension cab for years and I hated it – middly, ear pearsing so I’ve sold it before I started to use D style amps. Then I started to use Celestions: G12 century, alnico Gold and G12-65s. Just year ago played Larry Carltons Bludo with Bludo 1x12 cab with modern EV and instantly felt in love.
Got this new EV “classic” 200 w and I think it is very smooth (not much highs at all) very balanced speaker.
I’ve not noticed any problems with it Tom.
Try your amp with other topy speakers and if you notice more pronounced same problem that must be something wrong with the amp.

One more thing! I’ve also found that Fane alnico AXA 12 speaker is really great for D style amps. Check it out if you can.
Cheers

Thanks guys.

I will give those ideas a try.

I will also try the treble bleed circuit.

@Tom, inspired by your statement regarding the top end of your EV12Ls, I decided to take out my pain in the neck EV equipped Thiele cabinet, to try to get rid of the piercing top end of this speaker. therefore, I did some testing this afternoon with a newly build 100w OJAI clone (thanks Tony et. all).

The amp has a build-in parallel loop, and in order to simulate the high end loss associated with the cable runs of using an external dumblelator in serial mode, the amp has a 470pf across the OD master (Ratio). IMO this is plentifull high cut for running an open back 1x12 with a CEL 12G65.

However, in order to use the amp with an EV 12L equipped Thiele cab, I found that adding an additional 3n cap in series with a 39k resistor across the pot, takes care of the ice pick treble, that the old EV12L unit can have....it is not apperent (to these ol' pair of ears) when using the 12G65 cab.

So maybe this cap/cap+resistor combo could help you shaving of some high end on your amp (s). Your milage/taste will be diffent, but maybe you can use this for inspiration. Keep us posted on your findings.
