Major missing PT

Post by Reeltarded »

I have a 70 Major with a missing tranny. The Mercury replacement is like $500, and an original is like $1200. The tubes were accidently destroyed in a moving mishap. $100 each to replace.

What should I do with this amp? I could strip it to use the components for my 50 rebuild, or convert the whole thing into something new. 100 watt Express? Very loud Rocket with 10 extra holes?

Anyone have another idea on a source for a PT? Anyone know of a basket case Major I could buy? I have been looking for a long while, but busted Majors don't pop up so often as they used to. Hmm.. I don't know why I bought this damned thing. I didn't need a spare, and now I do.. wth!?

I would not not destroy it myself. Maybe sell it?

I don't think Magnetics Components makes a transformer for what you have but a usable Hammond equivalent shouldn't be much over $100.. For tubes, to get it running, you could buy some cheapos. If you get it sounding good then you can take what is worth a few hundred dollars and turn it into something worth quite a bit more to someone looking for a good players amp. AFAIK those are somewhat collectible..

I failed to mention that I have a others that don't need attention. I am not this thing's baby momma daddy. heh It's a spare for spares that I never used.

All good ideas. They are only worth a couple grand on the best day, and this one is far beyond the mark for coming back for what I'd actually pay for a nice one, unless.. Hammond transformer?

I don't have any, or know of any cheap tubes for starting with. Does anyone make a cheap 88 that won't melt?

One good thing is that it weighs about half as much as a working one, and not so hard on the old ears. :)

If its the OT that you need, you could use this one : http://cgi.ebay.com/300-Watt-Output-Tra ... 19bfa8360e

But it doesn't have the UL taps. Heyboer is usually pretty reasonable on custom winds, couldn't hurt to get a quote from them for it, maybe they could reuse the core if you have the blown one, I know Mercury can do that but probably pretty pricey.

Someone posted the most recent Lord Valve catalog here a few months ago : https://tubeamparchive.com/viewtopic.ph ... lord+valve

and he has good things to say about the new Gold Lion KT88, and the new Tung-Sol 6550 and KT-120.

Have you ever seen what happens to a Major when Ritchie Blackmore gets pissed that he's not the headliner ? : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aQ9P4qi8uo

Heyboer would be my first choice, they can also supply "English bracket" for the laydown PT transformer.

WTH???? Had to be part of the show. The back stage guy hauled ass out of there right before it blew and there was two guys w/ fire extinguishers sitting there waiting on the explosion. I love Blackmore, but that was unreal. I couldn't believe he chucked that jagged broken guitar out into the audience like that. I guess that was in a day before everyone had a lawyer retained waiting on a liability case. Then he pushes the speaker cab off the stage.............WOW, just wow. I used to be in a band with a singer that acted like that.....................LOL.

I had success with Heyboer! Thanks guys! I thought they were more for OEMs. Very good service, and fantastic prices on everything.

I am going to put this one back to eating electricty and use it to finance other resource destroying stuff!

Now, about those tubes.. lol

The guidance provided here is more than just how to find and use the resources, it's also about the balls to follow through.

:)

Mostly, I am an ADD OCD DORK. The only thing I'd be without the great people here is electrocuted.

And I thank you all.

I saw that tour but in NJ. It WAS part of the show, the center stack was a dummy, the stack on the right (stage left) was a backup.

When I saw the show he went to toss the guitar out into the audience but it hung over a rafter, neck on one side, body on the other. He only smashed 2 that night.

About a week later I was in Manny's in NYC and he came walking in with a roadie. The roadie said "Mr. Blackmore needs some Strats" and they pulled out about 20 of them, lined them up on the counter and opened the cases. Blackmore played about 3 notes on each one and tossed them back into the cases, closed some cases and left some others open. The roadie said "we'll take the one's in the open cases, bill Mr. Blackmore's account and deliver to the studio". By the time he'd said that Blackmore was waiting out in a double parked limo.

What an ass.
