Correct coupling cap values in an AC30?

Post by dehughes »

Hello all,

I THOUGHT that the correct cap values coming off the PI plates in an old school AC30 were .01uf caps, but then I'm beginning to think that this is not correct. The schematics I have show .01uf caps being used in the old AC30/4, but not necessarily in the 12AX7 AC30s that came later. I know that Top Hat and Matchless use .047uf caps in the King Royale and DC30 models, respectively, but I'm totally confused as to what the original values were in the AC30s of old.

I ask because I just built an amp that is one side EF86 and the other side 12AX7, and have been running .01uf caps off the PI. Now I'm second guessing myself.

Would someone please clarify what the historically correct cap values are off the PI in an AC30?

THANKS!

Yes, I've seen those, and the values range from .01uf in the earlier AC30/4 to .15uf in some odd schematics. Newer drawings from Hoffman and copies of modern recreations like Top Hat and Matchless all show values in between. I'm curious as to what the definitive value is (if there is such a thing...).

Here is what I've just learned, thanks to Glen L. over on the Plexi Palace Vox Board:

0.01uF was the original value for the normal version AC30/4.
0.1uF was used for the Bass varient AC30/4

0.15uF was the original value for Normal and Bass Varient AC30/6
0.047uF was used for the Treble varient AC30/6
