'Ginger' HT Supply + Decoupling

Post by '67_Plexi »

This is probably old news on here, but I couldn't find anything when I searched...so....
I was sorting through some old files and I came across a handwritten drawing I did of Gingers HT Supply and Decoupling when I had her in for service a couple of years ago. The reason I did the drawing was I was trying to figure out why there was so much bass in the amp. I really didn't need to go any firther than this. I never drew the rest of the circuit, had no need to.
I'm posting it because it's historically interesting as it was the first TW. A Liverpool for those that don't know. Far from the best sounding TW I've heard, but still it's interesting to some folks. I wouldn't bother trying to build anything with this supply, there's a reason he changed from it and you are better off with the typical supply seen in most of the others (I'm not going to say all because I haven't seen them all).

That's a pretty stout power supply for a quad of EL84s!

Wow, that looks very stiff... I wonder if he was aiming for a certain type of tone that was out of the ordinary?

Alan was that with 520V CT or 560v CT?

That is a stout power supply. Thanks for posting.

I have no idea. It was just in for a service for a customer, I didn't document anything more than I needed too. Just another amp coming through......reverse engineering doesn't pay the mortgage ;)

Yes it's way too stiff and that is the inherent problem with that amp as far as my tonal preferences are concerned. The reason I did the drawing was because I couldn't figure out why all the high uF caps were needed. Thought I must have been missing something, I wasn't, thats exactly how it's configured.
It actually uses quite a few period correct stock Ampeg components ???
The signal caps weren't the usual OD's you see in most of the others, but again I didn't record details or take photos. I'm sure someone on here knows. THey were either brown or green....lol......

If my mind serves me correctly, not only was this super stiff, but an inordinant amount of bass was allowed through the preamp too. It was nice played clean but overdriven it wasn't in the same ballpark as the others that followed it Maybe clean was it's intended use.

Sorry if I'm not a lot of use with further details. If I see any more that are interesting and I have time I'll make better notes.
