Fwiw, u r talkin two diff things here, clipping, which in a way mimics compression, and circuit compression, which is usually some power sup starvation. And the distortion sound of the ods is already so clipped, in a nice way, that add'l compression isn't desirable to me. I like dynamics on stage, and when the amp sags it prevents a lot of nuance expression. I don't want the amp doin' the talkin, i want to do it. W/o dynamics the quieter notes aren't there. If it's over compressed, for the sake of the quiet notes, then the big hit notes don't come out, and it's frustrating, like you're being held back.

I hear you, and I agree. The little bit of compression added with a one notch impedance mismatch doesn't go to that overcompressed feel where the big notes are lost. To me, it works well.

I also prefer a 50 watt amp to a 100 watt amp live for the same reason. I simply have to run the 100 watter too low on the master to get that little bit of compression.

guys, Why get so hung up on impedance.

Take a close look at any guitar speaker's impedance curve. Almost any '8' ohm speaker will go from 3-32 ohms across its frequency range.

Maybe its not a big deal?

FWIW, 8-ohm speakers sound smoother to me than 16-ohm ones...all other things being equal. The high-end on 16-ohm speakers is a little more choppy and not as clear.

I hear the same thing. I also like the feel and tone coming out of the 4 on the amp into an 8 ohm cab. Slightly softer feel. But I like 2 16 ohms wired parallel instead of 2 4 ohms in series to get an 8 ohm 2/12 cab. It sounds like you get more bottom end.

I agree...parallel is the way to go there. But I don't think you get more bottom...it sounds to me like the bottom tightens up; which can be perceived as being more. Putting speakers in series tends to sound like you have more mids...but I think it's just the highs and lows get less well defined. I think tighter speaker action is what a Dumble calls for...just MHO.

Yeah! Actually, something that sounded like an EV or a Sugarcone, had about the same efficiency, weighed in about 4-5 pounds. Anybody? Jensen? Eminence? Somebody?

I have a Jensen Tornado in one combo I have, and it sounds pretty good, but not as full-range as an EV.

I wasnt sure if the 12L was ever available in a 4 ohm,just because Ive never seen one,so thats why I wondered if the 124 was running the 8 ohm EV off the 4 ohm tap and if it was,you guys have explained the possibilities of why.

I didnt want to run a selector on my new/re- build because its useless to me and to be safe I run the 8 ohm tap to the jack and the 4 ohm to the NFB to pres control.But it was still iffy and if its of no danger to the amp and HAD did it on purpose,I may change that IF i am in no danger of burning anything up

(And I dont know exactly the specs of the OT i am using other than it was in a 100 watt 6L6 amp with 4,8,and 16 ohm taps and now its in a 50 watt and it worked fine till I mod it to death and decided to start all over.)

What're you a wimp... man up and lift that cab, blow out a hernia...

Yea, I'll admit it my PA cabs are neo in molded plastic powered, and I love that they weight 35 lbs and are self contained with 450watt/cab. Really saves lugging the heavy stuff, except my 2x12 combo.

Neo speakers so far are great for sound reinforcement but I've yet to hear one that's got it for guitar.

Jensen Jet Tornado is a great speaker.
100w, 98db and only 2kg.
I have two in the twin reverb and it sounds fantastic - lively, crisp, well balanced, and detailed without being harsh.
I‘ve tried Celestion century and century vintage, Emnence Tonkerlites and Weber neo mag 12s.
Tornado is a winner so far.
