were the EVM12L speakers 8 or 4 ohms in the ODS they were placed in?And what happens when you used a 8 ohm speaker in a 4 ohm out?

8 ohms. 4 out into this speaker will drop the amp's power a bit, not too noticeable, but it will likely be a bit brighter too, which you don't really need, the EVM12L is already pretty bright.

From what I remember, the choices were 8 or 16 ohm, not 4 or 8. Since Dumble usually used Twin Reverb iron I'd bet he used 8 ohms, 16 ohms would be too big of a mismatch.

I saw an ODS with an EVM that HAD tested and marked with a Sharpie. It looked like he was trying to find one closer to 4 ohms. There is variance from speaker to speaker that he took advantage of.
He marked the impedance at various frequencies.

FWIW, I use two 16 ohm EVM 12L Classics @ 8 ohms for use with my Dumble style amps.

And FWIW, I use two 8ohm EV12MLs wired to 16ohms in a 2x12 closed back with my Marshally 22-50W home builds. Sounds fantastic.

FWIW, 8-ohm speakers sound smoother to me than 16-ohm ones...all other things being equal. The high-end on 16-ohm speakers is a little more choppy and not as clear.

In the 2nd generation 1X12 combos from the late 70's HAD frequently used bassman iron with 4 ohm tap using either Altec or EVM 8 ohm speakers. It appears he was not too concerned with the mismatch.
I've been using this same configuration with an EVM12L for about a year now with no problems (knock on wood!), and it sounds great.

Mismatches can blow tubes up. 12L is my fave spkr

Hi crbowman,

AFAIK Alexander used 4 ohm Bassman (50W) and Twin (100W) OTs in all the ODS from 1st to 4th genaration up to around series # 12X. #124 has still a 4 ohm Twin OT as an example. From around 1984 (around #12X) you find the first switchable (4/8 ohm) OTs (MM as far as I remember right now).

Not that small of a mismatch, 4 ohm xformer, 8 ohm speaker. IMHO is adds a nice compression.

Compression, who wants it, for live it's all about dynamics--in the studio there's an La2a, 1176, or somethin, way better at compressing. I hate spongy amp sounds, a la muchless etc. If i want amp compression i use a tweed dlx,

I disagree. Overdrive is all about the compression, dynamics are all about the compression. What happens when tubes compress is the character of the tone changes far more than the volume. With the Dumble ckt when you hit a note lightly it's thinner and more cutting than a heavy handed note. This IMHO is the real beauty behind the Dumble amps, want it fat, bear down, want it to cut, lighten up, but without the compression the lighter notes just fade into the mix.

Fwiw, u r talkin two diff things here, clipping, which in a way mimics compression, and circuit compression, which is usually some power sup starvation. And the distortion sound of the ods is already so clipped, in a nice way, that add'l compression isn't desirable to me. I like dynamics on stage, and when the amp sags it prevents a lot of nuance expression. I don't want the amp doin' the talkin, i want to do it. W/o dynamics the quieter notes aren't there. If it's over compressed, for the sake of the quiet notes, then the big hit notes don't come out, and it's frustrating, like you're being held back.
