For heater wiring, you don't need 600v wire do you?

No, just saying what I use.
You could use wire rated at 10V if you want.

Tom, The wire I use for heaters is 1000 volt AWG 18 solid.

Do you have any trouble fitting that wire in the solder lugs on the sockets?67plexi wrote:Tom, The wire I use for heaters is 1000 volt AWG 18 solid.
Steve.
I ended up using what I think is 20 gauge.
According to most specs, the silver plated teflon 20 gauge can handle up to 10 amps.
I figure, what, 5 amps tops for the ODS?

Re: High Plate Skyline 100 Watt ODS
5A might be a bit close
6L6 draw 900mA each, and you got 4. That alone is pretty close to 5A, then add in pre amp tubes.
And using EL34 makes the current draw jump even more.

Re: High Plate Skyline 100 Watt ODS
Tom, Yes the heater wiring sucks that is why it is the last step for me in a build. Look at HAD builds most are 18 AWG solid wire on the heaters.
Use a fine file if you need to.

4 x .9 is 3.6 amps.ChrisM wrote:5A might be a bit close

3 x .3 is .9 amps
3.6 + .9 4.5 amps
20 gauge silver plated Teflon insulated wire can handle up to 10 amps.
I think I am OK.
I fired the amp up yesterday. I first used a light bulb current limiter and everything checked out.
I had a couple mistakes with the relays and the front panel switches.
Late last night I was measuring voltages and with all volume controls at zero I was getting some very loud full volume noise, like huge crackle noises.
Might be a ground issue or something or even a bad power tube.
Not sure what that is about and I will try to figure it out today.
I looked over the solder joints and didn't see anything obvious.
My observation while building this amp is that it is quite an undertaking.
There is a lot going on in these amps and for somebody to sell one for $3K is pretty understandable when you figure in the man hours to build one.
I'm sure if I was to build a number of these one after another I would get faster as I wouldn't have to take the time to design the boards and what not.
A lot of wiring and a lot of components equals a lot of hours!

It's hard to tell in the pics, is that 4 relays? What's the what what on them?

Is this a new type of mathChrisM wrote:5A might be a bit close

Re: High Plate Skyline 100 Watt ODS
0.9A * 4 is 3.6A. Fairly close to 5. Add in the preamp tubes for another 0.9A. 4.5A total, too close for me.Bob-I wrote:Is this a new type of mathChrisM wrote:5A might be a bit close

I don't know math too well though. I'm an electrical engineering student, no math there.
