Hi There:
RJ suggested I post this question here. Perhaps Mark F would know something about this.

None of them really IMHO.
The Stangray is basically a double AC-15 without the trem but with the special tone control. Due to this tone control the amp is rather clean and gets its overdrive partly from the phase inverter and the EL84 power tubes. Even though I am not the greatest fan of EL84 tubes I would not choose one of the known octal types (6V6, 6L6, EL34, KT66 etc.) because the preamp/PI would not be able to overdrive them enough.
The Trainwreck with the most Voxy vibe would be the Rocket - basically Ken's take on the AC-30 Top Boost.

cnscharles,
Welcome to Ampgarage. rj is a great guy so I would listen to any advise he has to offer.
I would have to agree with Darkbluemurder, none of the TW amps are related to the Stangray even though they share similairities from the phase inverter through power section.
The Stangray preamp is EF86 in V1, no tone stack only tone control and like the Rocket has a cut control wired differently then the Rocket.
You need to have both amps in your to build portfolio.

Re: Which trainwreck circuit comes closest to Dr Z Stang ray?
Hi There:
Thank you for the welcome and information. Perhaps if I asked the same question that asked RJ here...it would flesh out what my thinking is.
On Dr z's web site for the Stang Ray there is a video. There is a peculiar openess and bounce to the opening Tel lick and the ending strat lick. You can certainly hear the accentuated treble in 2.5 k range. However it is the amp produces that bounce and ring as if there is re verb present. I have listened to Rockets on you tube and it the resulting sound is stuck and it looks like you have push it through when you play. I have had many amps that have that stuck sticky feeling. So if I am going to build a rocket or two...I would like the design that has that quality described. I have heard EF-68 pre-amp circuits and I am not convinced that the tube is doing the "magic" here. Hope this helps.

I associate that reverb like sound to the use of celestion alnico blue 12 inch speaker, the Stangray matched to a pair of blues open back cabinet has such a chime and reverb quality. The Rocket will sound just as good with or without the reverb mod.the amp produces that bounce and ring as if there is re verb present

Hi Mark:
Thanks for chiming in, as it were. Any mods to the circuit or specialty part that will get me there. I thinking about using oil/copper foil caps?
