Favorite Cab For An Altec 417?

Post by rp »

I just got a lovely Altec 417C. I tried it for just a little bit with my open back pine cab, not the best for a Lightning or 5E3 but wonderful with the 5F6A. Can't really try my closed back without swapping baffles. I plan on finding a dedicated cab for it. Anyone have experience with this one and can recommend closed, open or Thiele? Pine or ply? Wide or narrow? My guess is that it'd be better with a Marshall type cab - ply and 3/4 baffle to limit colorations and maybe open as that was what the Mark I//II Boogies and and Pros & Twins were.

Maybe I'll get consensus and this will be easy :)

I have a single 417B in an Avatar large 1x12 oval back cab and a pair of same in an Avatar 2x12 cab. I have a closed back add on piece for the 2x12 but haven't tried it yet.

Both cabs sound great, typical warm but clean Altec tone.
