Well, if you don't mind Eminence, a simple web search and you've got a slew of choices.

http://www.google.com/#hl=en&expIds=255 ... 93747c32d0

I think AES has about the best prices on Jensens, if you are into Jensen.

The discriminator for Eminence will be the shipping charges, since the various prices are all within a few cents of each other, for the same model speaker. I think I originally bought mine from USSpeaker.com or something like that a few years ago. I have found them for $5 less now (Legend 1058).

For Eminence, I've used Bernie at BLTSound in the past. He provided good service and his prices were better. I've noticed however, that his prices these days are about the same as everyone else's. Free shipping though, so that helps.

There's a really good article regarding the eminence line here:

http://www.tonequest.com/pdf_pubs/sampl ... _Proof.pdf

Sort of tells about each model and what speaker they are voiced around.

Hellatone/Avatar Speakers if you like Celestions.

AES has free ship over $100. That's a good thing with heavy things like speakers. I've been looking right and left for a long while and there's either real price fixing or just very tight margins, everyone is within a few dollars of each other. Craigslist is good with much patience.

Other than a 4x12 slant stack with four Emi Delta Pro 12As, I'm also very happy with my tatty old Altec 417s in Avatar cabs, 2x15 JBL E130 cab and (coming soon) an old OEM EV12L in a Boogafunk Thiele cab in basic kick-ass black.

I do also like Alnico Tone Tubbies but haven't seen any deals on those!

Specifically I was looking for a high power, high efficiency 8" speaker that would sound good in an open back cab. I've got a couple of different chassis that fit the same Epi Valve Jr combo (until I can have something better built at least) and wanted to make a sort of sleeper amp, something that looks like a toy but packs a punch. I'm pretty sure I'm going to build the ubiquitous 5E3 soon and need a speaker that will sound good with this. I'm thinking the Eminence Alpha 8a is about as good of a speaker as I'm going to get (200W, 100 spl, good freq. response and pretty cheap) for what I want to do here..

A 5E3 puts out 15-18W tops. A 200W speaker will kill it. The 25W Weber sig12 or sig12S alnico will sound terrific in this amp, and is only about US$40

Hold off on that speaker. I have a Alpha 8A, found it dark, murky, and kind of 'slow' and sure as hell lacked punch, but that was in a Champ. I shelved it to use as a test bench speaker. I will try it with my 5E3 clone when I get a chance and post back.
