Vibration dampening tape needed

I need to find some thin rubberized tape to eliminate vibration between my chassis and the chassis cover. I often see such tape applied to the edges of chassis mounted in combo amps to prevent vibration, like on this Fender HRD. The tape is black, and about 1mm thick.

The tape's edge will show, so it needs to be black!

Any ideas?

I believe it's a double sided sticky tape that was originally used. it's just broken down over the years and looks gummie.

No, it's definitely black, and thicker than double-sided tape. It's still in good shape, and I was able to reposition it on the Fender. Also, adhesive is on one side only, which is important for my project, because the chassis cover needs to be easily removed.

Common, hardware store weather stripping is too thick.

I've had the same problems. I tried weather stripping, but even the thinnest is just too thick and makes for an uncomfortably tight fit. I wanted black too, but never found anything that worked right. I ended up using the white foam medical tape. I think it's made by 3M and is called Microfoam. You can get it a Walgreens, Target, etc... It is pretty thin and was actually too thin for my needs, so I just stacked it up with two layers. Worked perfectly - no rattles. Made a nice fit and the chassis comes in and out without needing to shoehorn it in with really wide putty knives or wallpaper knives. I just put up with the thin white stripe being visible. It is actually very thin and I am probably the only one who notices it.

Good luck getting rid of your rattle. Tube dampeners are probably next on your list. They were on mine.

Some non-rubber alternatives: friction tape - the old cloth electrical tape - comes to mind, but I haven't seen this in years. Maybe black gaffers tape, you can rip strips down to size, but the edge might be white, like duct tape.

There's an industrial rubber, foam store on Canal in NYC that has all sorts of strange things. I think I've seen rolls of narrow, thin black rubber gasket stuff, but I'm not sure, maybe that with some 3M 77?

I've had this trouble and couldn't cure it aesthetically. I got rid of the cover with no consequence. Edit: my head was in a cab btw no electrocution issue.

It is self adhesive rubber strip. I think you are able to buy it from hardware stores that sell rubber and sealing products.
I prefer neoprene rubber for that application.
It is available in various thicknesses and widths.

friction tape and gaff tape ( white seem edge when ripped ) both get gummie and nasty with age and heat.

Closed cell foam weatherstipping will work well (as selloutrr said) as long as you are not having to slide the chassis in sideways into the cab.. It squashes together nicely when you bolt everything up and is excellent vibration dampening.

I found a pretty good solution: tennis racquet grip tape! I couldn't find any that was adhesive backed so I had to glue it in. But it totally solved the chassis vibration, and it looks classy.

Yes, Hammond 10 x 12 x 2. The black powder coated boxes look great, but watch out because they're easy to scratch.

They've made those metal cases forever but I just found out about these. More hifi than instrument but I have some coke bottle 6l6gs and 5U4 just begging for something like this. Would be nice for a recording studio amp.
