100 Watt Output Transformer

Post by Structo »

I'm looking around at the various offerings for output transformers for a 4 x 6L6GC 100w ODS amp.

Normally you see transformers with ~2K primary impedance.

I was going to get a Magnetic Components Twin OT but AmpParts Direct is out of them currently.

I saw this ToneMaster OT at AES. $77

Listed as a 100w OT, 2350 ohm primary.

Compared to a 2K primary OT, will this 2350 ohm primary have less power output since E2/R=P?

My other quandry is, I want to have 4, 8, and 16 ohm secondary taps available on the amp.

Typical Twin OT's only have 4 ohm.

Weber has one but it is 4 ohm as well.

Weber has a Marshall 100w 1.9K, 4,8,16 ohm
So that is 1900 ohm primary.

While I'm thinking of it, I was comparing AmpParts Direct and Triode Electronics since they are the retail outlet for Magnetic Component transformers.

Triode has insane shipping prices! They wanted over $48 shipping for an PT, OT and choke.

While AmpParts only wants $15. So a significant difference.
But they are out of the OT I want.

God, I wish I could just order from Heyboer or Mercury.......

Tom, Heyboer makes a twin OT with 4, 8, and 16ohm taps. You cna order direct, if you're interested let me know and I'll send you the part number.

Hey Tom,

I think this one from Mojo would work too...

When I built my 100 watter I was going to order the PT, OT and choke from Triode and saw the CRAZY shipping price. I sent them an e-mail and they said the cart was calculating shipping incorrectly. They were able to ship them in one flat rate box. I believe shipping was under $20.00

Sorry Tom. I think I must have bought their last one. Just got one the other day from Amppartsdirect (first order - thought I'd give them a go. All went smoothly.)

FYI - the mounting holes are non-standard on this transformer.

That's OK Brian, their Ebay store had the bundle for sale @ $17 shipping.

What do you mean the mounting is non-standard?
Because the chassis holes are only 2.25" wide and the OT is 2 3/8" wide?
Aren't there slotted holes on the OT bracket?

You know, that is really weird.
I just compared dimensions and the 4,8, 16 ohm OT is physically smaller than the 4 ohm Twin OT. :x

Why would that be?

Tom, the transformers themselves are same size, it's the mounting brackets(elevated vs flat mount) that are different. The 4-8-16 Twin trannies that I got from them in mid 09' had the flat mount bracket and the mounting centers were a drop in fit.

OK, yeah I see now the body of the transformer sits lower on the 18013.

I wonder why they did that?

Also, the drawing shows the 18013 (4,8,16 ohm) OT as 3 7/16" wide and the 4 ohm only 18012 OT as 3 1/2" wide.

So the OT with the multi-tap output is narrower? :?

Oh well, I'm sure I will be able to make it work.

Funny no one has mentioned that before, at least I don't recall.

Tom, you are overthinking this :D

Through the years Fender used transfomers with both styles of mounting feet. The elevated feet do provide the advantage of raising the tranny endbell to provide clearance over any screw heads.

Again it's the brackets, the laminates are the same thickness. The endbell to endbell distance is .062 greater(1/2" vs 7/16") on one because it's brackets are slightly thicker and the endbell mounts over the bracket.

OK OK!

I'll try not to think about it..........but it's gonna be hard. :)

Since I really don't have any parts in hand yet, all I have to do is obsess about these things. :D

FWIW, Ned at Triode also handles the Magnetics component iron.

Has anyone built with them? I am always looking for something new to try.

Forgot to mention, the old 4ohm replacements that Antique (CE Dist) sells are also made by Magnetic components and fwiw they do not meausre anywhere close to a vintage twin tranny for coil resistance or inductance.

May not be the same for the Classic tone stuff, but that is what I found with the twin/showman replacement trannies.
