Aggressive buzzy and nothing like a good Dumble tone. Plus none of the vocal thing or dense low mids. Clearly we are hearing something in the chain influencing the sound more than the amp circuit.
Kind of what Bob I is saying in a different way......
DIRECT AB, They sound almost dead on to me. What do you think here Scott?
VERY GOOD!
They sounds great to me Scott! I hear the strainy thing in spades, just the slap back from the DD3 adding the artifacts. (Which I hear in Fords version) As always, thanks for checking it out!
Bob-I wrote:The Revelation clips sound nothing like the blues clip in the first post. No surprise that you can get a variety of tones from one amp (or pair of amps) but that's pretty dramatic. I like blues clip, the revelation clips sound buzzy and thin to my ears, although very similar to each other.
Different Cab, speakers and guitar, as well as the revelation clips being miced dead center straight on. (2/12 mesa close back cab with G12h30s)
Blues was 4 12 mesa with Mic at an extreme angle. i will post pics as soon as I get some batteries for my camera.
I have to agree with the others, that it's pretty hard to tell what is what, on the Revelation clips, due to the recording quality. The playing is great, and I suspect you are right in saying that they are close tonally, but trying to make a judgement from the clips is like being asked to sample fine wines from a spittoon.
It would be great to hear good quality clips of these amps, then we could all get closer to experiencing the real tonal characteristics of a Grail-tone Dumble.
Cheers,
Paul.
Hey paul,
The quality is actually excellent. Its the Boss DD3 slap back thats making it sound the way it does. thanks for checking it out and commenting.

Hi Paul,
to shorten the waiting time for all of us I've tried to find a clip of an amp that is perhaps at least a bit similar to one of the Grail-tone amps. Of course it is not #183 and because of this perhaps fails - at least to some degree - to nail "Politician" or "Revelation" as exactly as #183. But nevertheless: Does someone know what amp precisely has been used for this clip? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OyCdOZaJGw
Thanks for posting the link. Even though it is not #183 or Tag playing Politician, I think the guy on the clip does a pretty good job.
I have no idea which of the ODS suspects (4/5?) were used for this recording and even if it transpired that it was the Tan amp or #148, it would be difficult to know, just how much these amps have evolved since those recordings were made.
In order for me to create tones like those, the amp would need to be made of something more than just magic!
Speking of Politician. Here is a SMOKING 100 watt TwoRock Custom that I had. In this clip, I think it sounds even better than 183. All the vowel sounds are there. I stupidly sold this one because it was so LOUD.
Again, these amps are so close tonally, its very hard to tell which is which. I bought the amp used for 2400 is I remember correctly. a STEAL for the tone that sucker put out.
