What the hell is this?
Ok, asking for more help in rebuilding this old Oahu amp. Can anyone identify what this component is? It is attached between the wiper of the volume pot and grid of the 6SN7 preamp tube. According to the schematic, could be the 0.006 uF cap?

Are you saying that instead of "Don't let that smoke out!", your mottoselloutrr wrote:Looks like a really RAD Capacitor!

is "Don't let that Chinchilla out!"

Hey, thanks for that link! I have not seen a cap like that before. But I have seen a chinchilla!

I was going through the hard drive of pictures and my daughter wanted to share her pet Liam.

That's a domino mica cap, probably fine, you should leave it be. Leave the chinchilla in place too.
I've seen a cap like that before but never a chinchilla. It's been a good day all around.

Wow. That's a really nice old-timer. Mica cap for sure. Probably fifties'.
Couple years ago I got few old russian tube radios from thrift store for something like 20€. They were full of those caps. I've used them in some amp projects and they do sound really nice and mellow.
And what's best they are usually rated for high voltages.
There is a picture:

And there is a color code chart:

If you ever get enough of those in one spot, an amp capped entirely with
those sounds pretty unique. I hear many fond memories of how good old
tube stuff used to sound, those show up in a lot of old gear, before ceramics
became predominant. I would be nice if someone started to recreate those.

Yeah those mica caps sound nice and mellow. I find a lot of those kicking around in lab scrap piles and collect them whenever I can. Never tried an entire amp with them though. They may be older than 50's vintage, caps like that appear in equipment dating back to the 30's IIRC.

I've dug alot of those out of old gear as well. Alessandro sells nos and reproductions on his web page.

Re: What the hell is this?
I think at a minimum you'd only need four or five, three for the amp,
the first coupling cap and then two more after a paraphrase,
and then one or two more for a simple tone control(s).
I bet a zero bias first stage would sound tuff, the cap type would most
certainly shape the amps entire tone.
I'm in the middle of a amp, but that sounds fun, maybe the next one.
in one of the RCA manuals there's a radio thing thats paraphase and zero bias.
Wonderfully raunchy tone, that cap type would make it extra primitive.
allesondro ? I'll check it out...

Re: What the hell is this?
I'm sure these dominos were common in the 60's. I was in skool then and I remember learning how to read the dots.
I just ripped apart an 60's vintage Bogen 100 watt PA amp. It was filled with dominos, ceramics, super pups, and of course carbon comps . I plan to reuse as many as I can in the rebuild.

I got about 50 of those old mica caps sitting in the cupboard. If it works, leave it where it is
