Low distorted volume SLO clone

Post by versital »

Ok I just finished my SLO clone and my biggest problem was the Turret board layout was wrong showing the HV pre-amp to the wrong filter cap lead on the power supply. I was getting a very weird low voltage but the pre-amp still worked coming out of the FX SEND jack.

So I fired up the amp and finally i got sound, I've never been so happy!!!! .......But the sound is very faint, distorted , like was overloaded. Play soft and sounds almost ok, play hard and it overloads into compression. I was playing around with the presence knob and when turning it down made it sound better then,.... WAMMMM it sounded like a FIRE ALARM going of and i popped the standby off and felt dizzy.

I figured it was a reversed OT leads causing oscillation so I switched them, Now the oscillation is gone but the volume still sound distorted and weak and fades away with every heavy stroke on the lower strings. Also the Master Volume is turned to 9 o'clock (# 3) for room volume when this amp should be waking the dead. I again ran the send FX loop out to my test combo and the pre-amp sounded wicked Lynch Mob scary. SO any ideas to what this is?????? BTW I biased the tubes for -47v with 520v plate at 600mah with custom PT for 4x KT-88's

Is it weak and distorted even if you turn up the volume? Probably a bad OT. If the signal voltage is good coming out of the PI, probably OT. If it sounds great with the Preamp out to anothers amp with good cleans and distorted signal, OT again. What is the mA draw per output tube?

I have the same thing but it's intermittent. 70's ODS with added buffered loop. OT is fused on the CT 200mA as it is an old Bassman and I don't want to lose it.

I'll try the Send out to another amp, but I think my problem is probably a dry joint somewhere which I've not been able to find so far.
