best tube for D'lator

Post by Steven_nl »

Hi Guys

what in your opnion is the best tube to use in a D'lator (clone)? I'm looking for the most transparant/brightest option.

Tnx

When I was auditioning tubes for my D'lator I measured the cathode voltage on the cathode follower. You want at least 30v there.
I didn't notice much tonal changes between tubes.

This is the one place where I've found my old RCA long plate 12AX7 is a good choice, they were too soft for my ears in V1 or V2, but worked well in the D'Lator. JJ803 also sounded nice to my ears here as well.

Some of the original Dumblelators I had a look into, still have been fitted with the original tubes, selected and signed by Alexander Dumble. These original signed tubes have all been General Electric 12AX7A/7025, like this one:

I typically gravitate towards nice old long plates. The RCA black plate with D getter is nice. Raytheon black plate. GE ribbed grey plate. Tele ribbed plate.

I do not prefer the regular RCA grey. Or the GE Max mentioned unless the amp is bass heavy. I find the GE to have great clear top and nice upper mids. They have less stuff in the bottom.

Along those lines, the long plate Phillips I put in had too much bottom as did my nice Mullards.

I guess I did good because the tube I ended up with was a long black plate Raytheon.
Seems to sound good.
I got a bunch of Baldwin pulls that were Raytheon's and Sylvania's.
Most test good.
