Need suggestion re: a hum problem

Post by labb »

I just completed a clone of the Fender 5B3. Nice little amp. I made a few changes to the filament wiring in order to reduce 60hz hum. Fired it up and it does sound good with the exception that there is some hum in the amp. I do know where it is coming from..Fender for this amp use a pot with a switch to turn the amp on and off. This pot is the tone control pot. That is where my hum is coming from. I wired the 120 AC around the pot and the amp is very quiet..My question is, am I going to have to rewire the amp with a separate power switch or is there a better pot/switch out there that is better isolated. I am using an Alpha pot.

Did you try grounding the case of the volume pot?

I took the easy way out and installed a power on/off switch and did away with the tone pot switch...Hum is gone.
