Trainwreck Trannies, for the UK.. An Idea to supply them?

Post by JamesHealey »

Hi guys..

Would there be enough of an interest for me to start stocking clones of the Stancor transformers made by a UK transformer company?

I've been working closely with a Particular transformer company here in the United of Kingdoms and we've been working on cloning the Stancor wreck set.

Is there enough of a demand to order a batch of these and sell them branded as my own? for instance like tone slut and rjguitars did and do with the heyboer sets?

These might better suit the UK market due to pricing and I've got an original Stancor, Pacific Reissue and Heyboer for comparison.. and these trannies I've had wound are very much in the ball park.

ideas anyone?

In my case I have so many builds in the hopper right now that this would be interesting for me in a year or so. I can pass on some of my experiences, which may or may not be of help to you in your decision.

I have good experience with Heyboers from RJ, a good smooth transaction. The data for the iron is shown on his website and you have a choice of PT options for European use.

Physically getting US iron out of the German customs has been a pain in the neck for me. I was always ready for the customs fees, which even go on the shipping too, but it takes half a day of my time to get them physically out of the customs. If you want the goods sent directly to you from the customs it takes an extra two weeks.

So currently I use MM iron through an amp maker in Germany who handles all the hassles of customs, shipping and exploding volcanos etc. He sends them on to me well packed and if I need to know that elusive data for a MM PT or OT he checks that out with MM direct, they give me options for what I need and the price is right for the smaller iron.

I will usually give preference for a PT that provides US voltage taps as well as the European ones.

In the end these kind of things may give you an edge:
- the warranty (two years is standard here in Germany),
- provide full dimensions, including fixings, type (sit up / lie down etc) & the full technical electrical specs for all of us home brewers, even if they are hand sketched out dimensions & coil values. That will be of huge value, especially when deviating from a 101 Wreck build.
- 230V + 240V + US taps for maximum application
- it may help to state who is doing the winding, which country that is done in, the quality, some history etc.

All the best.

I think that will largely depend on the price level. Even if international shipping has gone crazy, the T'wreck sets should end around 250USD for the set, plus customs but shipping included....
Since you are in the UK, and inside EU, that would solve the customs handling problems for most of Europe, though...

There are already fairly similar irons offered in the UK, but for me here in Norway, it's actually cheaper from the US......some UK makers don't bother to ship outside EU either....

I guess you have to ask two questions

what would be the demand.. so far not very much from this thread.

secondly can you offer a pruduct at a good rate that will compete with a well branded product. thats the real hard part.

Allot of guys would rather pay the extra because they know what they will get. really in a PT and OT theres probably not much more then £50.00 worth of material between the two. its adding the mojo that costs.

if you do get a whole batch made let me know, I may be interested in helping you sell them.

cheers

Mike
