Princeton project suggestions

Hi all,

I have a butchered Princeton (no reverb) It needs new transformers (PT and OT, suggestions welcome). And I want to have a little fun with it as a project amp.

I'm thinking a 'Dumblish' inspired amp. I looked at the D'lite schematics/layout.. But will it fit in the chassis?

Any cool ideas/links to simular projects welcome.

Normster built a 16x8x2 D'lite and his layout is floating around I can load up later so it will fit into a Princeton chassis no problem.

The Princeton chassis makes a perfect platform for Normster's Rocket Reverb octal power tube amp. The chassis has the correct number of tube holes for that.

A few years ago I bought a '69 Princeton for $40 US. I have to be honest and say that, for its size, it was the most lifeless and anemic classic amp I've ever played through (I also have a much-loved old Princeton Reverb so it's not just the brand). I wanted some compact power so I cleared the board and created a hybrid '59 Bassman power amp with a 763-era Super preamp. I was able to use all the old caps, most of the resistors that were still in spec, and installed a choke, biased for Sovtek wafer-base 5881s and added a Deluxe OT. The frequency response is very even so I use this little amp with both my rack and my acoustic rig.

I am building an amp now that uses a Princeton chassis. It is indeed quite small but if you take your time and plan things out you can fit a whole lot in them.

On my build I got, clean channel, OD channel, one tube reverb, tube recto, FX loop with switchable buffering, two relays and a separate PSU for them. Lots of iron, 5 pieces total, 50W OT (big!).

If you look in the Dumble files section you can find some rough layouts for a PR ODS.

I just did a PR with a IFR820 source follower added to the trem circuit (and with much better filtering than the 'one-can' method). It has a 6k6 Pr Z OT and idles at about 430 with a pair of JJ6V6S driving a weber Sig12S. I did my own layout, and I did the grounding as per Merlin's excellent article on separating all the ground return paths to their respective filter cap ground returns. It is a quiet as a mouse when not singing, and otherwise everything about it sounds a heck of a blues machine (and it got a good workout at the blues club last nite).

Try a 50W #40 Dumble w/out loop (no room for 4th 12AX7 unless you get real creative). It would be better with Normster's built in loop (see his '97 ODS layout).

I did this in a BFP Reverb chassis (which has the 4th 12AX7 slot) and it is killer! Actually a #13/#40 cross w/ carbon comps in the OD circuit.
