GLS Microphones
Have any of you tried these GLS Audio microphones?
They make SM-57 and 58 knockoffs and I can get the 57 for $30.
I want to use this for mic'ing my guitar cab.

I heard their 57 knockoff (at least I think it was theirs) once. I wasn't impressed. Get a real SM-57, and you won't regret it. One of the most versatile and surprising mics on the planet, and well worth the money.

Re: GLS Microphones
Haven't tried them Tom, but I personally would prefer to spend a little more and get the real deal...after all it's a standard mic, that we're all familiar with.Structo wrote:Have any of you tried these GLS Audio microphones?

Re: GLS Microphones
Yep Tom,
The real deal is worth the bucks. I have several that work fine to this day, some that are 35 years old.
These days you can still get them for around 80 bucks.

Re: GLS Microphones
The other part of the deal, Tom, is that if you trash a 57, Shure will replace it with a new one for about $40 USD, ( last time I looked... )
That tips the scale in their favor, in my book...

Re: GLS Microphones
Tom,
There is a little more high end on the GLS compared to the SM-57 and the output is a little higher on the ES57 than the SM57 so you have to watch your levels.

Re: GLS Microphones
If this is the mic I tried, Cary's made a bit of an understatement IMHO: although it seemed to have more high-end extension than a 57 (which you don't need in a 57), the impression overall was that it was trebly and lacked the low midrange girth until you put it MUCH closer to the source than a 57 needs to be, and by then you were introducing other sound problems because of proximity. It just didn't sound as good.Drumslinger wrote:Tom,

Could be I'm talking about a different mic, though...Whatever it was, it was an acronymized company name that looked a lot like this photo and claimed to be "just like an SM-57!"

Re: GLS Microphones
real Shures (obviously) have a track record but I think you need to watch what you plug the output into (because the mic contains a transformer) otherwise you won't get the intended response. I don't see why you'd cheap out there though since they aren't that expensive anyway.

Re: GLS Microphones
greiswig,
just might be the same mic but for the pocket book, it's not a bad little deal.

Re: GLS Microphones
I see your point, Cary. But from my limited experience, I'd rather spend the extra money and get the real deal. For the same amount or only a little more, get a used one.Drumslinger wrote:greiswig,

I've made the mistake of trying to scrimp before, and at the beginning of a signal chain in particular that has never worked out well.
Now, where did I put my Schoeps stereo pair...

Re: GLS Microphones
OK, I hear what you guys are saying and usually when I have tried a shortcut or gone cheap it ends up costing me more in the end.
So I'll just get the real thing or some other decent mic for recording my amp.
Maybe one of those handheld thingies? Like Zoom or others.
I've heard the guys on the guitar forums like a few of those.
Didn't Scott get one or was that a camera?

Re: GLS Microphones
Good to hear that they still take care of the customer. My last "issue" was in the late '80s when they replaced for free an SM-57 that I bought in the '70s.Bob Simpson wrote:The other part of the deal, Tom, is that if you trash a 57, Shure will replace it with a new one for about $40 USD, ( last time I looked... )

I've still got it. Good gear is a good investment.

I totally agree. I prefer the MD421 or the MD409 mixed with an SM57. The SM7 is also a nice mic.
