Should i hack my SF Twin to #124?

Post by Tonegeek »

I have a 72 Twin Reverb I have been using for FX return. I have been wanting to do a #124 ever since I built one for a friend last year but can't decide if I should restore the TWin or use it as a donor for the non HRM. The TR has already been modded extensively although it only has one extra hole drilled in the back plate so it could be restored. THe faceplate has been painted so is unuseable for a restore. Plus I have no use at all for a Twin and who would even want a silver faced master volume Twin. Yuck! I am leaning to making it a D clone.

If I do go the clone route there are lots of possibilities for adding in extras like verb, dumblelator, etc. since there are 6 preamp tubes. I was thinking of only reusing the chassis, trannies and tube sockets. I will sell the speakers as they are the reissue Jensens and nothing special. I may sell thE cab too. I have a good THD style cab that Ken Jones at Revamp made for me loaded with G12-65's so am good for that part. SO, maybe I should just convert the Twin combo to a head or get Ken to build me a custom head cab. any suggestions?

If I do a head, I was thinking of building in digital FX with it instead of a reverb pan which takes up too much room. ANyone done that? I would just want verb and delay.

I would build the Dumble out of it.

That gives you the transformers and choke you need along with an adequate sized chassis.

I have been considering making a head cab with the bottom notched out for either a Dumbleator or a different 1U rack sized compononet like a TC Electronics Delay and Reverb.
That would be cool.
Or build the Dumbleator internal and have the 1U rack hole so you could put whatever choice of effects there.

I just bought a TC Electronics G Sharp, I'm trying to decide if I like it.

Rack space is a good idea. I would build in the D'lator regardless. I would love to find just the circuit board for delay/verb and build that in also.

I've been thinking of picking up one of these to play with...

Looks interesting. Most of the hard work is done...I think. 8)

Thanks Deric. I knew I had seen this before:

I started that thread, but I cannot figure out the application sheet, which is a schematic desription of how to hook up the chip.

I can see how some of it connects, but what is all this other stuff that connects to IN and OUT on S1. Is S1 a relay?

And what is the box, second from left, top row? Is that just a connector board?

Plus it's real hard to read.

Apparently they sell three different modules with three different programs on them.
I don't understand that add on circuit either.
Appears to be for a pedal with an 8 position rotary switch but they don't tell you much about what it does.
What other controls are present there.
Or do you always hook up the pots and switches as shown on the original pdf file?

This link shows a typical application for a pedal.

http://www.oct-distribution.com/datashe ... C8-G01.pdf

The module is the same but is available with different program sets for different applications.

There are 8 different programs in each program set. SW0, SW1 and SW2 are used to select which program. The 8 position switch on the schematic uses a logic chip to select different combinations of SW0, 1, 2 for more convenient front panel access to all 8 programs.

Each program has 3 adjustable parameters via P0, P1 and P2.

My thinking was to start with the module and make a small test board with 3 dip switches and 3 trimmers. I would probably just build the pedal circuit (on a separate board) to make sure it works.... from there, work on a driver and recovery circuit suitable for an amp.

I don't really want 8 programs - just good reverb. With one pot mounted on the front panel. Maybe a switch to switch between 2 programs - 1 just reverb and 1 verb and delay.
