5d2 rebuild - looking for original pics
Just got hold of a 1954 tweed Princeton 5d2 in relatively poor condition - virtually every component replaced, circuit changed to 5E1 front end, and the cab needing 'stabilising'.
But the chassis, transformers, pots, board, plugs, speaker and other fittings were all there. And it worked.
What I want to do is take it back to the original 5d2 circuit with original components. I have a fairly large stock of 50s capacitors etc for the job.
Does anybody have any photos of original components used - or in a similar vintage amp such as 5c2, 5c3??
Also, does anybody have any comments on this old circuit - remembering I am intending taking it back to stock, warts and all.

Don't have a 5C2 or 5C3, but have found a pic somewhere (can't remember where) of a 5C1 - will that do? (Edit - good luck finding those Astron caps BTW - you might have to reconsider that bit)orrong65 wrote:Does anybody have any photos of original components used - or in a similar vintage amp such as 5c2, 5c3??.
I hear 6SL7 pre-amps are cool-sounding, but its one of those things on my yet to do list - so can't be of any further help at this point sorry

Re: 5d2 rebuild - looking for original pics
If you want it to look original, you'll need to find the correct caps, remove the insides, and put modern caps inside the casings. Caps that old aren't a good candidate for restoration. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble.
Resistors will be carbon comp. If you want to pay, you can find them. They probably cost 5-10x modern metal film or carbon film. There are only a few, so the total cost won't be all that much.
Cloth wire is not hard to find.
I think these are the things you'll need.
Good luck.

Here's a pic from a '52 DLX. Ohmite WW, llarge CC R's, Astron coupling and Minimite filtering caps. A '54 would use the same type of components.

Thanks to those who posted pics. Very helpful, as were the comments. I have a large stock of Astrons, Cornell-D, and other moldeds, so will use them. For the electrolytics, I think I will go with new Sprague atoms.

FYL, that is a killer photo. And a great example of a really clean board for its age. Something about those old Astron caps and the carbon comps...olde tyme. Really cool. Thanks for posting that.FYL wrote:Here's a pic from a '52 DLX. Ohmite WW, llarge CC R's, Astron coupling and Minimite filtering caps. A '54 would use the same type of components.
Re: 5d2 rebuild - looking for original pics
That's a nice clean Deluxe. Compare that to the 5A3 I recently got... nothing original left.FYL wrote:Here's a pic from a '52 DLX. Ohmite WW, llarge CC R's, Astron coupling and Minimite filtering caps. A '54 would use the same type of components.

Why don't you use nice repros of vintage elcos instead? For the electrolytics, I think I will go with new Sprague atoms.

I have a fairly large assortment of used 50's vintage wirewound resistors if you need any help in that department.
