Bassman 100 Restore or ODS ?

Post by roadkingbluzs »

Ok I purchased what I think is a '72 Fender works fairly good, but has not had any work done on it. Needs new caps etc. Cab is loose at joints, looks to have been dropped at some time.I did a search here and did not find much with regards to this amp. Found some 50 and 70 stuff is about it. Would like thoughts, ideas from members i.e., ODS overhall, restore to orig., restore to Showman specs. or? I have enough projects going but could not resist buying this as it was a good deal. Thanks Bob

I don't think the Bassman 100 is a valuable vintage piece, but before you rip it apart try searching Gbase, ebay and whatever source you can find for pricing.

I did that with the Peavey Deuce a friend gave me and found it to be worth, next to nothing, so it'll become something else.

You could certainly clean up the power supply and play it to see if you like it as-is - standard inputs are voiced separately for both guitar and bass.

That aside, it looks like a good candidate for an overdrive makeover:

When I started buying Fenders in the 80's, the Blackface amps weren't very rare or expensive. Now a lot of the Silverface amps are getting up in price. My suggestion would be to restore it cosmeticaly, do what you want on the inside and have fun. Just don't drill any holes and save all the parts.

I think you should do an ODS conversion but use the exsisting holes so you could return it to normal just in case the amp becomes more valuable.
It's true i've lost my marbles and i cant remember where i put them

Excellent platform. Like many Fender's they have started to get more expensive. It's basically a twin chassis (sans a few tubes), bigger output iron (BTW: I add brackets and lay them down, which makes room for reverb pans), punch a few extra sockets in there and you can do a loop, reverb, etc. I like a small fan too...

Lots of space to work....decent end results. 8)

I agree, more bang for your buck as a starting platform. 8)

Thanks gang for the ideas. Lot of real estate to play in. I will post pics later today to show condition. I know there are some players that do not care visually of condition of amp, as long as it performs. I'm from the other camp I like a sweet looking at least decent looking amp. Looking to replace faceplate with Showman. Hey ,maybe Showman specs. with some ODS tweaks? Excellent idea about the xfmrs Andy. Later guys...

bassman 100

Here are a couple of shots. Chassis is narrow by 3/4" at center and two pots not original, wrong size. Face plate real bad shape. I think now to take to Showman specs., then tweak to ODS flavor? Anyone know where to obtain a Showman repro faceplate. May be a bit short but it's ok with me.
