What diodes in ODS?

Post by Frankie »

What`s the purpose of the 330 r and 1N 4003 diode from filaments to amplight on ODS?
Can I replace the 1N4003 with a 1N4001 diode?

What diode used for the 50w- 100w switch with the two 10k resistors on ODS to ground? Can I use a diode from a stomp box? The stomp box is 9v DC.

I`m out of parts here so I must use whatever I can find in my trash can.
ha ha!!

You actually don't need the diode in the filament circuit. But yes 1N4001 will be more than fine for that spot. The diode is there to create a pulsating DC voltage. The 330R resistor is there to limit current so as to not fry the LED indicator. You don't need the diode though as at 60Hz (or 50Hz) the LED will be turning on and off so fast your eyes wont be able to tell.

For the 50W-100W switch use a diffused red LED like HAD did. Ones from stompboxes will be fine here.

Frank, the diode is just rectifying the 6.3VAC leg from the filament supply to 6.3*0.7 = 4.41VDC and the 330R is the dropping resistor to allow the amp power light (LED) to operate at the correct forward voltage. A typical red LED calls for a 2.0V forward voltage so you need to drop 2V across that resistor to safely power it.

1N4001 to 1N4007 all are rated to 1.0A. You should be fine with that. The 1N4001 is 50V max and you won't be anywhere near that.

I prefer the ultra fast version of the 1n4007, which is UF4007, I think the bottom end gets even firmer.

Me too. All of my builds have UF4007 now.

Those are great for the rectifier. For everything else though they are not needed, pointless really.

With a current limiting resistor of 330R you can bet that HAD used "standard brightness" LEDs. These exhibit low luminous intensity of around 5-100mcd @ 20mA, so you'd need that lower resistance in series with the LED. If you were to use a high-brightness type with the 330R part, you've got yourself a laser beam! In that case just up the resistor to about 1K or so.

BTW, given that the forward voltage of a red LED is about 1.8V and the filament supply is around 6.3V, HAD wanted to put about 14mA through his indicator LED. I think that's right...

Look at the intro to this clip, very dimly lit LED.
