Anybody thinking about Scumback speakers be careful!!
Gotta tell you I know everybody loves this guys speakers but beware. I bought a vintage Marshall head a few years back and called him to ask if he would retolex it. He said he would. Then I decided to move the amp along and contacted him telling him that I had sold the amp. Well he freaked emailing me telling me I am a flake, assh*le and all sorts of crazy stuff. So I told him sorry and even paypalled him the $35 he was out on the tolex. I mean come on if you are in business you buy supplies and sometimes things change. Bottom line is I sent him the money for the tolex anyways so he wasn't out any mney. So fast forward to tonight, I send him an email tonight saying I might be interested in buying a pair of Scuminico's and this is how he replies to me:
Chuck,
I’ll be brief, blunt and to the point, since you need it.
You’ve done your fair share to discredit my speakers, and me online (most recently on the Amp Garage forum) ever since you pulled your childish, selfish, bullshit stunt two years ago on that head recover. Explain to me why I should I entertain the idea of selling you any of my speakers? Please, I’d really like to know. I just want to know how a man with a child’s brain thinks.
And for the record, I gave the tolex and materials you paid for to the guy who bought the head from you. I feel you ought to know that not everyone is a cheap fuck looking out for themselves only with no regard for honesty, and doing what they said they would.
If you can explain that to my satisfaction, I’ll sell you some Scumnicos. If not, go look on the used market, because frankly, I just don’t give a flying fuck.

Jim,
I know we had an issue a few years back. But I feel I rectified the situation buy paying for the tolex. So you probably ended up making double on it anyways. I got myself a great Trainwreck Rocket clone and want to put a pair of speakers in an open back 2 x 12. I talked with Alex and he swears by your Scumnico's. I am in Chicago working until the first week in June. Once I get home I'm gonna run by Alex's and try out the Scumnico's. If I dig 'em I'd like to buy a pair. Will you be cool with selling me a pair? If so geat. If not no problem. It is gonna be a few weeks until I can try them out but if I do and dig 'em I'll just go to your site and order them if you let me know you are cool with it.
Thanks,
Chuck Proctor

You have 8 posts here. Where on the forum did you discredit his speakers ? I found nothing of the sorts. Doesn't matter what the situation was , for a business to respond like that is uncalled for .
I'm sorry you had to experience that.

Yeah, true to form, Chuck, you spun the tale a bit different from the truth, huh?
Here's the truth...and yes, I'll post Chuck's emails where he calls me names if that's a concern, but what's the point? The fact that he posted this thread is evidence enough of his true intentions.
1) Chuck contacted me to recover his head cab, asked me to order the tolex/piping/etc. for it, he'd send the head cab out. Figuring he was an honest guy, I did. He also said he needed a quick turnaround so could I have the tolex by a certain date, recover it over the weekend, and ship it out the following week? I told him sure, I could do that.
2) Recover materials come in, I email Chuck. No reply.
3) After 4-5 days of no replies, voice mails ignored, and his deadline passed, I contacted someone else who knew him. That person told me Chuck sold the head cab, and had it for sale all along, even while asking me to buy the tolex/piping/etc for him. I email Chuck to ask WTF is going on.
4) A few days after that, good old Chuck replies saying he did sell the head, and he wouldn't need the tolex, sorry.
5) I told Chuck that the piping for a head cab is different than a speaker cab, and the amount of tolex I bought wasn't going to be enough to do a cab, I'd need 4 yards to wrap a cab.
6) Chuck replied that I could save it for the next head cab I did. Of course, I had no intentions of doing any head cab recovers, and Chuck knew that before I ordered, that this was only because it was an old 69 head cab that I was doing it at all.
7) Chuck basically told me to pound sand, and after I told him what a lying, cheap fuck he was, he finally paid for the parts, grudgingly and not without giving me a bunch of shit for it.
The guy he sold the head cab to hired me to retolex/restore, which I did, and I GAVE the tolex/piping/etc to the new client at no charge, he paid only for the labor. That was, of course, after Chuck screwed him on the sale & price of the fake Marshall knobs he sold him, and hiked up the shipping price to him.
9) Then Chuck thinks it's ok to say I probably made out double on the deal so he figures it's ok to order speakers from me two years later. Of course Chuck has made many posts on the TGP and other online forums about how he's never liked a Scumback, wouldn't ever consider one, although he's bought a few before the head cab incident. He even made sure to tell me that while he enjoyed his Scumback's tone, he wouldn't feel right about keeping them since I treated him so badly, and that he would post as such to anyone who wanted to know.
So, needless to say, as soon as I bitch slapped Chuck for thinking everything was cool, and accusing me of making out double on him, I figured he'd be here to post a thread.
Gee...how did I come up with that conclusion?
Moral of the story? You deal with Procos/Chuck Proctor, you deal with a child with no integrity or honesty. And if asked to do the right thing, then he bitches about it. Jesus, Chuck, you're so transparent and predictable. I would have answered this sooner, but I felt the last episode of LOST was more important, and I knew it would be here when I was done.
So, in closing, grow up Chuck.

Re: Anybody thinking about Scumback speakers be careful!!
8 or 9 months ago I posted here about a Marshall 4x12 with English Greenbacks that was nearly unusable because it had way too much Icepick in the brain treble. I was thinking about selling off the Greenbacks and replacing them with Scumbacks (all 4 of them).
Jim responded with a PM telling me to try a few tricks first. He sent me the diagram to re-wire to 60's specs and told me to change out the 22ga. wire with at least 16ga. There were a few other little tricks also, and it worked great. What impressed me was the fact that this guy told me how to solve the problem even though he could have very likely made money off of my situation. I respect that.
I don't know Jim at all. I've never had any correspondence with him other then described above, so don't take this the wrong way. There are always two sides to a story, and I'm guessing Jim's doesn't sound much like what is described here. Get over it. This kind of drama is what makes me avoid the Gear Page, and I certainly hope the mods put a quick end to this.

Yep. And for the record, I've recovered one head cab to date, the one Chuck sold to the guy he screwed over. When the new owner told me of his experience with Chuck, and tried to pay me for the tolex/piping/etc I told him I wouldn't take his money for that, just to help defray the extra costs he incurred from what Chuck had done to him.CapnCrunch wrote:Beat me to the send key Jim. Here's the restored head cab, and the thread I did about it.

Re: Anybody thinking about Scumback speakers be careful!!
I've delt with Jim via email many times, I've sold him tubes, He's advised me on old Greenbacks I've had.. and I've also bought a set of Scumbacks from him..
Everytime nothing but a gentleman, appears you have pissed eachother off no end and bringing it onto this forum is NOT COOL.
Can someone delete/block/lock this thread and ban the tool who started it?

Re: Anybody thinking about Scumback speakers be careful!!
I've been around on the internet for quite some time.
The only time I have seen Jim get upset is when somebody jerks him around.
His speakers and cabs speak for themselves.
He has always been helpful in his posts and emails so I think this one guy has personal problems and airing his dirty laundry in public is pretty immature.
Don't lose any sleep over this Jim.
There's a chump in every crowd.
BTW Chuck,
Why do you feel the need to post this on the Amp Garage anyway.
Seems you are almost opening up your self for defamation of character.

Man I hate these type of tactics where people post negative information about vendors or anyone in particular. Leave it off our Forum please.
I have not yet used any of Jim's speakers but I intend to and I am quite certain he will be a gentleman when we do get down to business.
Jim has always been very helpful on this forum and other forums.

Have talked with Jim numerous times while I flip flopped back and forth on my purchase decisions and he stuck it out and was patient with every email. Sharing some opinions with each other, I felt he was about as honest a man as you could find (especially in the world of guitar).
Still waiting for my m75-60, but I have nothing but good experience with Jim.
I hope this can get worked out between you guys without anymore ranting. Admit mistakes and move on I say.

There's nothing to work out here, between Procos & I though. Chuck had his chance to do the right thing...uh...three times by my count, and he's always got to throw in a dig at me for his screw up, even though it's pretty clear it's his screw up. But let's face it, I'm partly to blame, I gave him more credit than he deserved and trusted him to do what he said. At this point, if he wants speakers, he can get them through the guy he heard them from, and I just better not know. But I won't deal with him directly again unless he does something else goofy.
Beaten this one to death, I think folks. If someone can get the mods to lock it, delete it or whatever, I think that's more than appropriate. The thread he started on Rig-Talk was already locked after 45 posts, most telling Chuck he shouldn't have started the thread at all.
I'm sure he'll start more on other forums, it's the way he is it seems.

Agreed. Lock this one and throw it in the trash.
Re: Anybody thinking about Scumback speakers be careful!!
Jim's got my vote. I've dealt with you on a few occaisions, and you put up with my waffling and angst on what speakers to order. Were always true to your word.
Used to also go to TGP a lot, so have a readers informed opinion on who says what and who to believe. Do likewise, and it's pretty apparent.

Re: Anybody thinking about Scumback speakers be careful!!
Jim,
Can spin it anyway he likes. I contacted him as soon as I decided to sell the head and he flipped on me. He never left me one voicemail either. So I don't know where that came from. I told him I was sorry but I would have the guy contact him that bought my amp. That wasn't good enough for Jim and he sent me an email calling me all sorts of names. Even after that I asked him what he was out on the cost of materials and sent him that amount via paypal. Last night I tried to make amends and Jim replied with the above email. He can say whatever he wants but I have done hundereds of transactions over the past 10 years and never had a bad deal. It is what it is.
