Delta amp? Gut shots
From another board. Cut and paste. Fellow needs help with id.
This came as part of a lot i bought from the estate of a friend. What i know about guitars and amps would fit in a thimble and still leave room for a finger. The 12AX7's and EL84's are Mullard, the rectifier simply says "made in Holland" so i assume Amperex. The speaker is a 10 or 12 inch Magnavox field coil. There no big "can" filter cap on the top side of the chassis, so is it safe to assume this is a design that uses the field coil as a smoothing choke for the P/S?
All comments and info appreciated, i'd also be curious about current value.

Seek immediate medical attention if you suddenly go either deaf or blind.
If you put the Federal Government in charge of the Sahara Desert, in five years time there would be a shortage of sand.

Wow, that certainly is different.
Is it made in the USA?
Pretty strange jacks as well.
Look out for spiders!

Love the cob webs!
Damn - that wiring reminds me of the inside of crystal radio I build in Electric Shop back in the 8th grade! (That was back in the 1960s, btw...)

That is an oddball! Field coil speaker but '50s construction style.
Wood looks like American late '40s early '50s plywood I have a '47 BR-9 and a '47 Magnatone that have wood like that.

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
Those are old standard telephone jacks.
Got a shot of the "amp" sub chassis yet? and are you gonna figure the schematic.
I'd get a turn's and impedance figure from the opt for the tube type and load too.
There's only so many inverter types but I'm sure there will be a unique
feature in there some how.
from another board .... damn.... get him to post a gut shot.....

Do you suppose that blue shaft pot in the corner is a bias balance pot for the two 6BQ5? Definitely push pull. Definitely trem with enough tubes. Is that square gizmo towards the upper left side of the guts the infamous photo resistor thingummy? <edit> nope, answered my own question, it's a piece of angle for shield. Why? Was the hum balance pot humming? groundloops groundloops.
Peace, Love, and Hard Liquor!

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
Oh also, we grounded both ends of the shield on the cables I see. Also the flying splices (black taped lumps) indicate that the FC speaker was done later by an amateur.....

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
awesome... thank you. the dress look like it was assembled with some experience.
The chassis looks punched too. But the fuse holder looks like it was added
as an after thought, off center.
don't think thats a hum pot. Looks like the vol. and ton. are dressed pre like a silvertone or a dano.

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
The iron is coded 831932, which reads 831 = EIA code for Magnetek; 9 = year, probably 1959 as Magnetek's EIA code was issued in 1953 and nobody used field-coil speakers in 1969; 31 = week.
Nice find, well worth a full restoration IMO - which will be quite easy as the amp seems in excellent condition.

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
So was this amp not originally a field coil speaker?

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
Could be a retrofit. The pots et al. look like late '50s CTS, iron is from '59. Knowing the markings on the pots and speaker would be very useful.

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
I guess I got this problem with a '59 date on this amp when we got no octals at all. I think the FC is retrofit because of the flying splices.
The style is really cool. The front panel appears to be plain vanilla aluminum but the lettering; if it was that old letter transfer stuff, which Dumble used incidentally, is extremely well done. If we could tell for sure it was silk sreened it would help, but wouldn't the manufacturer have put a logo on a screen job? The other forum is convinced it was a home built. If so, it was a pretty skilled builder for those days.
As I mentioned over there. Hartley Peavey and Bob Crooks hung around doing odd things in Nashville while Leo was cranking them out in California. It could well be a custom job by somebody who knew very well what he was doing. If the PM speaker blew, there were tons of old FC speakers around to choose from. Any radio tv repair shop would have them for about zero cost. With 15 watts or so, it would have been easy to fry the PM speakers around in those days. I have first hand experience. I had a pair of 6BQ5 at about 350 in cathode bias that I smoked (literally) a 12 inch PM speaker out of my folks old Capeheart. That would have been '62 with a DeArmond in my acoustic.
The cabinet style and cover is late '50s early 60's though. Chrome dinette stuff. I'll keep him posted on our musings.

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
It is kind of a cool cabinet though.
Have it sitting to your right on the floor and be able to see and adjust the controls.
All the other amps of the time had the controls on the back or top of the amp.
I wonder if it is a "one off"?

Re: Delta amp? Gut shots
The font which spells out DELTA on this amp looks very, very similar to the font used by Delta Power Tools. That nameplate could possibly be a later addition by someone other than the builder, for whatever that is worth.
