It is from the Grizzly tool company. Their president started building guitars and offered some of the stuff. It plays like a 6 or 7 hundred dollar guitar, has crappy pickups and has a short neck just like a LP and I don't like playing it. I've never liked that short neck feel of the LP. The paint job on your saga looks nice, did you manage to get some gold flake for future builds? I think I do a top if I remember correctly with a half ounce or ounce. I found it in a 1 lb. can for like 45.00. Easy to shoot but the proof is in the prep.Structo wrote:Nice!

Nah, Tom, I sold the Bel Air maybe 13 years ago...probably even longer....maybe 1995 or so. I had a few Carvins before I realized there were Marshalls.

I'm not sure if you have ever heard of it but there is a online store that sells high quality nitro lacquer in the popular Fender and Gibson colors.
It's called Guitar ReRanch.
There is also a Guitar ReRanch forum paid for by the owner of ReRanch.
It's a great forum dedicated to restoration and also new guitar projects.
The store has a paint called Goldtop that is very very close to the Gibson goldtop color.
The color I used is Shoreline Gold which was a Fender color back in the day.
It's not really a gold color per say but yes, it is a very fine metallic.

Re: Let's See Your Rig!
Wow.......
I'm going to get my wife right now. I want to show her your gear. This MIGHT get her to lay off me for a little while. She keeps harping on me that I need to sell some gear, while I'm telling her I just need to build one more amp. I've never built a Dumble style amp, and NEED to.
I'll let you know if it works. In other words, don't hold your breath. That is an impressive collection!

Re: Let's See Your Rig!
I've been to reranch and it's a great site. I just bought the flake because I found a place close to home that sells the exact stuff that gibson used. If you look closely where my arm crosses the top of the body you'll see the green hue. That is from the bronze flake which is what gibson actually uses to create their gold. Reranch sells the same stuff and I believe they have it already mixed in the can don't they? I don't know how they do this as my leftover rarely lasts beyond a day before the bronze flake starts turning the whole mixture green. As for shorline gold it is a nice looking color and you did a nice job shooting it.Structo wrote:Hi,passfan wrote:It is from the Grizzly tool company. Yes, Goldtop in a can.
I believe Bill the owner uses the bronze flakes in his paint.
So you're saying the bronze oxidizes pretty fast if left out in the open?
I haven't used the RR Goldtop yet but soon.

Re: Let's See Your Rig!
I've used bronze powder in a completely different application.
Just a tiny bit will work well to add a fine extra sparkle, a depth.
Not sure I'd want to use it as the primary flake.

selloutrr,
Your daughter's gear looks boss! I trust she has some
little riotgrrrrl friends that are starting their first band. I wish I
had a short scale to start with. A kid's hands can't really function
on a full-sized guitar.
I like your gear too. What's a bottlecap pickup? A Piezo mic?
NG.

Re: Let's See Your Rig!
YEAH she rocks the metal! her friend plays the drums they are pretty bad ass a wall of noise!
my go to rig as of late has been the sunn model T half stack running the distortion ch. with the les paul honeyburst in middle position with treble pots at full the bridge at 1/3 volume and the neck pickup at full. I'm not much of a pedal guy I have a nice colection but honestly i've never been a fan. The other way i run the rig is with a morley active A/B/Y switcher out to the sunn and the risson both equal volumes then i can pull three voicings. or kick in the risson to give a bit of a mid crunch to the tone and add energy.
some of the pedals i've dabbled on from time to time. Roland space echo RE201, fuzzface, big muff, morley volume pedal/wah, mxr phase 100, vox mcCoy, purple dunlop wah, stevens hyper drive, ibanez delay pedal, flying pan, soldano surf box, marl martin boost, ross compressor, demeter opto comp, small stone, octavia, and the boss octave pedal.
I need to get back to playing bass, my rig is the swr and ampeg cabs huge head room and total control. teamed up with a musicman stingray, fretless jazz bass with custom electronics, gibson rd artist bass, warwick thumb 5, pedulla, rickenbacker 4001, gibson ripper, thunderbird or '67 p bass. I would set up a good sound for the room on the head and used the tone controls on the bass to give the voicing for the song.
the down side was the rig weight in at almost 1000lbs when i was running 4 cabs but damn IMO it looked and sounded GOOD!
best of luck with convincing the wife
I'm getting ready to pull all the gear out next month and put in hardwood floors and studio baffle the walls as well as add earth quake straps so i can go taller. I'm leaning toward a british theme. old vox ac30's marshall plexi and super lead stack. maybe an orange stack and laney super group. not sure what bass rig really says british. super beatle or hiwatt maybe. though i'm sure the 60's SVT stack will get along. I really want to make room for a purple suede love seat!

Re: Let's See Your Rig!
Not sure if you have a handle on the sound proofing and I'm sure the internet has all the info you need but,
I'm a journeyman plasterer by trade and I have worked in a few home studios and home theater systems.
On a lot of projects we deal with sound dampening materials.
There are a few different ways you can go at it.
One is to simply double the sheet rock by screwing another sheet over the existing.
There is a metal piece called RC-11 (Resilient Channel) that you first attach to the wall horizontally to the existing wall.
You screw into the studs.
Then you screw the new rock to this channel. It's like a floating wall.
The sheet rock is hanging on the metal that lifts it about 1/2" or so away from the existing rock.
They use this a lot in apartments to cut down the noise.
Works well on the ceiling as well.
[img:650:300]http://soundproofing.org/images/RC-1-wi ... _proof.jpg[/img]
If you are going to strip the walls to the studs so you can insulate the spaces between the studs even better.

Here is a good article about sound proofing.
Hope this helps,
Tom

Re: Let's See Your Rig!
It's the primary color in Gibsons gold top recipe. You mix it straight with gloss laquer using a ratio and voila'. Yes once you mix you must shoot as the flakes start to settle back to the bottom and you must constantly shake in between shots. It won't last more than a day and I only mix what I need and throw out the leftover. It comes in a dry powder form and will sit on the shelf forever (unless you get it wet)Structo wrote:Yes, Goldtop in a can.I believe Bill the owner uses the bronze flakes in his paint.
Yes, once it's mixed with nitro. I don't know how Bill gets it to sit right in the can But I've seen some beautiful jobs at his site.Structo wrote:So you're saying the bronze oxidizes pretty fast if left out in the open?
