Tom and Zimm, thanks for the kind words.

Did you record it as set in the picture? If so those are some great tones for the masters being so low.
Unfortunately the settings in the picture are not the ones I recorded with.

My usual settings are:

NOR input, Vol @ 1 O'clock, Bright & Mid Off, Rock On, Treble @ 10 O'clock, Mid and Bass @ 11 O'clock, Drive @ 10 O'clock (2 O'clock- clip 3), OD vol @ 9-10 O'clock, Master Vol @ 11 O'clock, Presence @ 10 O'clock.

As dogears has mentioned in the past, keeping the MV high and using the D'lator to control the volume is the way to go. (For me at least)

I would bet no way..... Paul said he used the 'lator recovery as a MV. Also, he said he has a 47pf bright cap. There is zero way that the clips, which sounded great, were recorded with the master at 1.
I would love to say I had the MV on 1, but you are absolutely correct, the amp sounds lifeless at that level. If the D'lator has to work overtime to raise the volume, I find that there is a higher noise content also.
As always Scott, thanks for your suggestions that have helped get this amp to where it is today.

Great job - great playing and great tone - you've raised the bar on D.I.Y. Now get busy making your own guitar strings
Guitar strings, I hadn't thought of that! I find it tedious enough to change the damn things, let alone make 'em before hand. Once again Henry, many thanks for all your help in the past.

Odd that I always though Robben played Life Song through a Fender amp, most likely a Super, but you nailed the tone (and the song) with the Dumble clean. Just great stuff!!
Thanks for the kind words Bob.
I've always loved Robben's clean tones. They have a 'gravitas'/ girth about them which I was always hoping to achieve. I definitely think I'm closer than I have ever been in that respect. It's great to be able to play clean and still have a tone that has some chunk.

Tony, as you know, your input has been invaluable in getting me here. Thank you.

Great playing, great sounding build. Do you feel it need improvement?
That's a tricky one. It reminds me of a story I heard about a conversation between Coltrane and Miles. Coltrane asked, ''How do you go about ending your solos?''
To which Miles replied, ''Try taking your horn out of your mouth!''

Something like that, anyway. I can sympathise with Coltrane, it's hard to know when to stop!

This amp has a choke resistor in it, so I will be swapping that out to see where that takes me. I'd like to do 'before and after clips' so that I and anyone else, can see what the difference is.
I love the clean sound with the EVM12L, they are a perfect match.
Absolutely! As soon as I've saved my pennies, I'll be getting some G12-65's though, which I'm hoping will improve the OD sounds. The EV is a little too clinical with my amp on the OD channel at times.

I must also thank Brandon, whom I owe more beers than you could ever imagine.

Cheers,

Paul.

On another note, while Tag's exDumble did not nail JingChi tones or Handful of Blues tones, it did nail the OD tone on Life Song. Just perfect....
Scott, how were the cleans on Tag's amp? Do you think RF used the same amp to do both clean and OD parts of Life Song?

Cheers,

Paul.

Paul
Just to add one quickie here as I too am a big fan of cranking the master (at least half way) and using the return to control most of the overall volume.. If your running the loop/ efx series try cranking the send and lowering the input on the effect.. This helps get that CF moving and adds a thickness to the tone..(Think Plexi)..Not that yours needs it.. Thought I would mention the other side of the loop also has it's benefits too.. Good Luck!!

Paul, how do you like this OD tone? Compare to Life Song tone.

All your clips sound great.

Despite trying an assortment of mods to my Ceriatone HRM, I still can't get as much of that 'horn' tone as I hear it in your clip #3. Not even using a d'later.

So I though I'd try putting my amp into the 101 configuration - but upon looking I see that the Ceriatone HRM's design like the 101 - which I did not like as much until after I messed with it.

However I noticed that feedback loop on V1B is not on the 101 schematic - least not the one I am seeing. Neither are the V2 snubbers in the OD.

But I think I see them in your amp's photo - so they can't be doing it. Do you perhaps not have them in your last 101 design?

Could the stock Ceriatone OT, perhaps, also be not helping?

Paul's amp is non HRM.
The HRM is a different animal.
Perhaps you mis read where he said that?
I'm sure if you were to ask and post clips and pictures the guys could help you get closer to your target.

Huh??? You smokin' something Jim? Considering the help I have extended to the OP as well as future tips when and if I uncover some circuit info on the amp in question in the vid, and the reference to a tone he loves, it was on point.

But I guess you don't need any of that info and were already aware of my help to Paul.

Tom,
Thanks much for straitening out my misunderstanding [and for the schematic]. I saw the schematic labeled ODS 101 HRM and, so, assumed the ODS 101 was specifically an HRM. But I see now that Paul did say it was a NON HRM.

For me if it's the horn like reed vibrating type effect your after the Non Hrm does this the best or at least is more dynamic and better controlled in that department..It's a kind of flutter effect you get with the intensity directed more at the attack or the amount of signal triggered naturally.. The speed of the flutter is determined by the frequency..lower frequency slower the flutter..Where the effect really jumps out is double stoppin on the EAD strings it really works best when using your fingers.(Striking the 2 strings all at once) more signal at the initial attack).. You can get this with an HRM it's more guitar dependent and is a bit more temperamental.. This is why we like to run preamp tubes lower than most..Music man amps deliver the woof flutter in spades..Although 124 will do nicely..keep the voltages low..

Definitely in the same mould.

I understood TAG when he said D'clones have got a different kind of upper mid content than the real deals.

Sounds as though it may have your Ojai thing going on in it! Did you get a look inside?

Cheers,

Paul.
