Where to find metal grate for amp head?

Post by mlp-mx6 »

I've built a crude head cabinet for an amp. I'd like to put some kind of metal grate front and back, preferably in black. Any idea where I could source some?

Thanks,
Michael

I think you might want "expanded" mesh. Paint it any color.

Yep, expanded metal grating is the stuff. You might want to try your local steel supplier as well. In the past I've gotten free expanded grating scrap, large enough pieces to use on small Bar-B-Q grills or small speaker cabinets.

You can find unfinished steel diamond-pattern expanded metal at Home Depot, Lowes, etc, usually in the hardware section, near the racks of sheet metal and metal rods and such.

The Lowe's by my house even has aluminum 'union jack' sheets that look pretty nice, and are much easier to cut with hand shears than the thicker steel ones.

I got all the materials to make this back panel at Home Depot:

Depending where you are, if you see any guys doing stucco on a house or building, many times they use the expanded metal for lath.
It's what I used to do for a living before this friggin recession hit.

Should be enough scrap laying around to pick up for free.

I just don't know how much stucco is done in Atlanta. :D

Otherwise the sheets of the metal are around 3' x 6'.

Thanks much, folks. I found what I needed at Lowe's. Now I just need to cut & paint it.
