I'm new , first question for 100W

Post by grtamp »

Hello everyone, I am new in this forum.
for some time that I read many post to better understand these amps Dumble and I would like to build one.
I have already experience with tube amps and have built a few pieces for me and some friends.

I would make a 100w non-HRM, model # 124 seems a good scheme, but I am undecided!.
Certainly, my questions are many, this is' the first:
indecision on the values of resistors plate, what better?

CLEAN OD
100k/1k5 100k/1k5
100k/1k5 100k/1k5

220k/3k3 220k/3k3
150K/2k2 150K/2k2

Or mix ?!?

any suggestions is appreciated
thanks a lot

These are not choices you need to make before building as these are easy to swap out.

Personally I like the high plates, 220k/150k on V1 and 180k/120k on V2. I find the overall response to the amp smoother and more controllable.

That said I'm not at all happy with my 100 watter so I'm thinking of trying 100K plates to see the difference. It's just TOO timid.

The 220k/150k as Bob mentioned won't give you the compressed spring lively-ness (cork-sniffer terms) on the top as the 100k's will.. The 220k's will be stiffer and somewhat darker on the top depending on the voltages... were talking clean channel here.. However 220k's will have a stiff chime appeal about them w/ stock Skyliner/124 values..

the 220k's on the clean channel translates to the OD channel w/220k's as well as a nice thick harmonically rich OD (at lower volumes) that also provides a slightly tighter bottom..

The 100k's in both OD and clean won't give you that thick OD tone of the 220k's without the help of a pushed output section to thicken the pot..

So it's all a kind of trade off balancing act..

I like 180/120's on V1 and 220/150 as a kind of medium.. Totally personal

You'll really have to try them both to see which you prefer. My kinda lame-ass description in a nutshell is this, the high plate/cathode values are a little darker in the clean channel and provide a more refined, controlled OD in MOST amps (great for you fusion dudes). The low plate/cathode values are a little brighter and more raw sounding in OD, a little more raucous.
But the bottom line is you should really try both and report back with your preference! It's really not hard to swap 'em out and it's the only way we can keep the everlasting high plate/low plate debate going.

100k on V1 requires at least 10u cathode bypass caps while 220/150 can go with 4u7 on both V1a/V1b or even lower on V1b

anyway it's a matter of taste... so build it and then go tweaking!

The lesson of the previous posts is that when your order resistors and caps, get several different values. They are easy to replace. One caveat, if your supply wires are coming up through the bottom of the lug or turret, leave some of it sticking out and laid flat. That way when you pull one resistor and replace it, you won't jam the wire back down the hole and have to fish it back through (a royal pain). Good luck, Skip

I built #124 with 100k plates and it sounded great (sparkly highs on clean - best clean tone of any dstlye I have built). I have not tried any other variants but did a couple of HRM versions with different plate values, but not as low as 100k.
The OD was not raw as some describe, but was different than the HRM. More woodwind like, if that makes sense with the best kind of mids you can imagine. Goes into feedback easily. There are lots of tweaks you can do to the OD section but trust me, it can sound great.
When ordering parts, besides getting extra rp and rk/ck values, get 2 values for the mid cap 10n and 47n (.01, .047). Also get some extra treble caps and caps for the mid boost. Get extra caps for the first OD triode coupler and the input cap to the PI. Then pick the ones you like the best, but build the stock circuit first and work from there. There are also some great mods contributed by other forumites that enhance the useability and tone of this circuit. Good luck.

thank you all for your suggestions, I think to start w/100K plate resistors like #124, and then hear how it sounds, make changes if necessary.
I'm finding this forum really available and competent people, thanks to all for your support.
Thanks
