70's Clip inside

Post by talbany »

OK here goes.. First I did this in Cubase 5.. Just loaded it in today. The cussing began around noon came real close several time to doing a Pete Towensend on my laptop.. It may cross over into the red a few times and the effects are real sucky.. I'll get better as I go along.. Plenty of clams here for everyone.. Amp is My 70's I just built..100w w/ Funky OD entrance..No Fet straight in... Guitar is my Jeff Beck Strat with Lace Sensors I know.. It's what I had here today... Anyway enjoy the clip future clips will I promise sound better.. Any opinions appreciated and I love this amp..

Great tone first off and dig your style of playing as well.
Nice saturation and bloom @ 1:35...

That amp is CHESTY it hits me in the chest from here
through jbl monitors it sounds sublime.

Nice to hear how these amps sound with that style of playing..
Great to hear some bar work with this style amp as well.

I am digging it its just right not harsh anywhere Full notes
with just right amount of lo end and yet it saturates and blooms.

Great sounding amp to my ears...

This year is going to be expensive.
I want one

Great to hear another approach at these amps...

I was curious how they sounded say in jeff beck style
how these amps react to using the bar ect.

My question was just answered and I would buy
a 70s style build now just from hearing that amp.

I was hoping they were not too raw and had plenty of lo end.

Keep them coming great playing and it comes right through.

You should be proud to say you built that amp.

Now I want one too.

Jeff beck comes to dallas next month.

I can tell you might have heard him play once or twice ...

bravo on a great amp

Thanks so much..It's my first time at using Cubase and fumbled all through it.. The only thing I had here was a 57.. I would love to try some nicer Mic's.. Yes there is not an ounce of harshness in this amp.. The 70's are wonderful and can live on the OD channel..I would give anything to hear Jeff play through this rig.. Put me right to shame..

Wow Tony, if that's a rough cut, I can't wait to hear what the "good" ones will sound like - that's an awesome sounding amp. Maybe it's the guitar channeling "the Man" himself, I hear a lot of "Guitar Shop" tones in there. I can really hear you playing the amp, and it responds very nicely. Two questions, what speaker were you using, and how loud did you have the amp to get it to sing like that? I couldn't quite get there without the extra gain of the FET, sounds like you nailed it straight in. Keep the clips coming!

I like it Tony!

It has a melancholy vibe to it and fits the backing track very well.

Nice tone on the amp.
Bit different than most of the ODS clones I have heard and I mean that in a good way! :D
Tom

Don't let that smoke out!

+1 Tony, that is excellent! Just what I want mine to sound like. What FX if any were you using, and the speaker? I know you are a Celestion guy.

Bill..Thanks!!
Speakers are G12-65's in closed back 2X12.. (These were very early production speakers made before they actually started selling them so I don't know if they are still the same.. I imagine so)..As far as the volume I would call it a comfortable gig volume not loud but not real quiet either..I prefer the sound of close miking but like to record pretty loud so it's delicate balance..The mike was 2' away an inch or 2 off axes..
A few other tid bits.. The OD tube I used was an RCA 5965 which I believe has a gain factor of 47 so it's like an AY..The ratio was set on 7 ..you can get the same amount of gain out of an AX set on 4 but the OD tone is fuzzier and less chime'y..For the rock type stuff the AX works but for the slow blues where you want more definition and clarity/chime on the top the lower gain tubes with the ratio set higher sound more natural to me..
Much of the sustain I get comes from my hands.. I stopped using a pick a while ago.. When I use a pick now the first thing I notice is I lose the sustain or control over it.. The amp still has an enormous amount of sustain and bloom I guess it's just better controlled that way for me.. (The whole clip was without pick)
The Lace Sensors are a love hate thing with me.. They have a kind of funky top end roll of to them 10k or so that doesn't quite give you the snappy top but if you play with your fingers right hand you can get too much of that if your an aggressive player.. No doubt why Jeff loaded them in his early models..They do help with the smoothness of the top end on these amps keep in mind..
Thanks everyone for the comments and compliments.. I'll try to do clip of the clean channel and one of the Music Man in a few days.. Hope this helps...

Hey Dave..The effect is an LXP-15.. Lexi.. I would put it a notch above the Inteleflex's The pre amps are pretty similar but the verb patches are better to my ears.. Medium room setting.. Built in loop..G-12 65's..I also like the 30 watt Heritage greenbacks which no one here has commented..There less chime but more wood..The 65's were loaded so used it..

Sounds great! Loved the wigglestick action throughout. I guess if you have a Jeff Beck Strat - wiggling the stick is mandatory 8)

Agree, the tone is very articulate. I like the upper midrange and the Beck wangbar stuff on this one. Congrats Tony on a great build!

I have 57s as well love em for close mic stuff.

You might dig a ngk 468 they are larger in diameter
than a 57 so larger sound if you will.

Those 468 mics are cheap and amazing to my ear.
if your standing directly in front of cab
then off in front of pa same sound.

Buddy of mine clips his to 4 12 cab live
and his sound is great live.

Keep hearing about royer mics too
I need to hit the lotto first.

Hey you wanna sell that amp ?

Let me know I know you can build another one....

Loving the sound of that amp through jbl monitors.

The type jbls you can tune any room with ...

You set a mic out center of the speakers in center of room
plug into monitors and it woop woop woops in the room
and they self tune to any room.

What is mind blowing is you might have windows that rattle
before you tune them and after the mic reads the room
it wont rattle the windows or things which rattled before hand.

Cant explain that one folks but I see and hear it with my own eyes and ears and I thought that is quite handy..

I am listening through these.. JBL LSR 4328P Studio Monitors

If any of you get a chance to check those monitors out
do so you might be buying a pair I want the sub too.

Great great sound

Tony,
thanks for contributing these clips.
A welcome change from the usual Ford/Carlton thing.
Don´t get me wrong, I like that style too, but I am a little bored by the idea that a Dumble-type amp is a Ford/Carlton emulator.
Tony´s amp is a good demonstration of what the 70s amps can sound like.
Looking forward to hearing the "good" clips
