Torres Amps

Post by silversurfer »

To All,

Has anyone built a Texas Boogie or Super Texan amp from Torres Engineering? How do they compare with all the other Dumble style amps?

thanks

Heheheheh, yeah Torres doesn't get a lot of props here mainly because the techs that are here have had to deal with some of his amps and mods.

Mike Silversurfer,

I have the Torres Super Texan and it absolutely is the worse sounding horse crap I have ever own or played through. Even worse than the Kingstone SS amp with 3 inch speaker I had as kid. :D

When I first got interested in amps around 1990,Torres was putting out the "no where else on earth" "tone secrets" of "absolutely the best" and can "only can get it here" series of newsletters.

I have to give the man credit for sticking to his business model. However self aggrandizing it may be, I admire consistency in business. One newsletter from 1992 has three pages proclaiming the sovtek 5881 (those wafer based ones) as being the "best" and "all time greatest" tube available worth far more than those "old" JAN surplus tubes which were cheaper than the sovtek in 92.

He fills the need of the novice to avoid practicing their instrument by equipping themselves with the "truly killer" tone. During this time I had him mod a beat up bassman head and not to stray too far from the herd, it did actually sound good. Now however, it makes a woo woo woo oscillation noise. When I look into the chassis .................. cat box!

Exactly as received from a customer to be repaired. He invented hack butchery.

Customer was not happy. I rebuilt as an ODS, and he posted a very nice review on HC, and slammed Torres in the process. The amp had biasing issues, tremolo issues, motorboating, and had been back 3 times ! It had some wacky switchable single ended or push pull output with an output transformer for each, lots of wacky stuff going on. Pictures are as it was when unpacked....just amazing.

I'm rebuilding mine as we speak and I already have it sounding better which as you guys know didn't take that much to do.

Next I am rewiring the relay board and rerouting all those shielded wires and I will change out the board to tube sockets wiring. The wire used is so small it can't even be 22 awg probably 24 gauge.

Heater wiring is ok. Oh there is a wire nut used on the choke I believe it was. So that will be redone as well.
