1x12 cab for EVM12L

I just picked up a pair of (non-reissue) EVM12L's, and I'm planning to use one of them with my 50w #124-ish build. The other will be saved for use in a combo of some sort. I'm currently using that amp with a ported 1x12 with a Vintage 30 in it. The Vintage 30 sounds pretty bad to me, and I don't like the way the cab makes the low E string twice as loud as the other strings. I'm getting rid of that cab soon.

So, I'm going to build a new cab for it. After reading dozens/hundreds of threads on the subject, I'm left with two options: a plywood TL806 or a pine semi-open-back. I guess I like the idea of the lighter pine option, but I've read so many good things about the TL806, that I don't know which one to pick.

Any help would be appreciated.

As an added incentive, the TL806 was designed for the EVM 12L so there is that.
I have yet to try one, I currently have two EVM 12L Classics in an open back 2 x 12.
Great speakers for sure.

I would like to build a double 806 some day.

TL boxes sound great with that speaker but, can be rather small to perch a head on. That boogafunk makes an oversize one. Do a search for member "muchxs". He built me a 1 x 12 oval back that is just the right size and sounds stellar! I am sure their are others on the forum that can help you out.

I've got an old 8 ohm evm12l in a TL806 that I built. Like others here, I built it wide enough to accommodate a D-style head, and added a baffle internally to keep the volume the same. It sounds great, but lately I'm finding when paired with a Celestion the combination is very much better than the sum of the parts. I have found, like others here, that the Vintage 30 alone just sounded like ass with these amps, as did the WGS G16-65 clone that I tried. Either one in it's own 1x12 open back cabinet paired with the EVM12L in the TL806 sounded wonderful.
I also just put a 12L in a 2x12 open back cabinet with a WGS Veteran 30 and it too sounds great. Haven't gigged with it yet, but I expect it will sound great with a cranked amp. More "alive" is the best way to describe it. The 12L alone always sounded a just a bit flat to me, lacking color from the speaker itself (great for some, just not for me).

I should be fair, the Vintage 30 sounded like ass, the WGS G12-65 was usable but marginal... I haven't tried the Veteran 30 by itself yet, it sounded so good with the 12L that I just left it.

I made 2 TL806 cabs and use a 12L in one and a 12S in the other. I get more kudos with this cab combination than my other cabs. Although I do like my 2 12 cab, the EV plans are clear and concise. Built the frame first, then add the sides, back, top, bottom and baffle.

I am courious about the difference between the EV in a TL806 vs. The the EV in a D'style oval back cab. Is the Thiele cab a must for this speaker?

I use the Thiele with a 12L almost as a reference speaker. I have a matching one with a Swamp Thang and the two work well together. You don't get a lot of speaker "opinion" out of these things, though. sh

I've been running EVM12L speakers in 1x12 since early 80s. I like the open back (oval back) 1x12 from Brown Note better than anything I've tried.

The amp is a recently parted-out 50-watt Grailtone. The rack is a Dumbleator and a TC G#. I've got a 100-watter in pre-build mode (80% of parts assembled) right now to replace it and an HRM 50-watt I'm selling.

Off track; I just finished primary soldering on a 5879 front-end build from schematics by Geezer and Tubenit on the Hoffmanamps forum. Very interesting amp. I still need to fiddle with the reverb and make the cab but it shows a lot of promise.

Interesting the 5879 is basically a Marshall with the 'mod' that Soldano sold in the early 90s.

Is the TL806 as directional as a normal closed-back cab? That could be a dealbreaker for me.

Most of the appeal stemming from the 806 is it's tuned port (in relation to it's size) and the frequency response of the cab/ EV.. In the 806's case the port is designed to amplify the resonant frequency of the cabinet which is primarily low end and low mids.. ( not sure of the exact tuned frequency) The added low end response projected from the port makes the cabinet sound bigger than it is IMO.. lower frequency's are generally non directional so you don't need to stand directly in front of it to hear the low end it produces..

The upper mids and highs (or the resonant frequency's not being amplified from the port) are going to be more directional being that it's a closed back design..(sound projected front only)
So it's a trade off.. Closed back ported cabs are more efficient at dispersing lower frequency's which are non directional
Open back cabs are better at dispersing a more non directional sound overall being that sound is projected front and rear (Highs and lows) but it's not going to give you the low end texture of a ported design.. Hope this makes some sense!!

I'll say it again ... been using EVM12L since early 80s. I'm liking the open back the best.
