Print out the tube spec sheets for 12AX7's and 6L6GC's, learn the pin-outs and what all the different sections of the tube are called and their functions.

And... build something easier for your first build, people aren't telling you that to try and put you down, they are telling you that because that is either what helped them the most starting out (good experiences), or what they wished they had done first based on experience (bad experiences).

A bad experience with a tube amp could be your last...

You may be pleasantly surprised by that 5E3.

Most agree that it is the best tweed amp ever designed.

It will be good experience for you.

I've build around 10 amps (including fairly complicated soldano X88 and Boogie MK III) and repaired a lot of amps during the past 20 years, prior to building a ceriatone OTS, which initially was somewhat of a disappointment. I spent around 1½ years modifying same amp, with great help from the forumites here, in order to get a good dumble amp.

Therefore, listen to the advise people are passing on to you here. Don't jump into a Dumble amp as your first project. A 5E3 or a Champ clone is a good starting project.

Yes that 5E3 amp will be a great project and playing amp and should have good resale, especially a Mission amp.

Do you mean use the Blues Deluxe as a speaker extension for the 5E3?

Sure, that shouldn't be a problem, just make sure you unplug the BD from the speaker before running the 5E3 through it.

What impedance is the speaker?

Welcome and good luck with your build. Do not forget to read about safety as these amps utilize dangerous voltages!! Once you complete a build, plug in and play, games over you will be hooked. Great bunch of guys here's with ton(e)s of knowledge. Get the iron hot and let the solder flow. Safety First!!

im not sure what the speaker is rated for ohm wise (not near it at the moment) i was saying just using the blues deluxe as a straight cabinet and building the 5E3 as just a head for the time being (help cut some cost and but still have the effectiveness with learning and still able to use it)

Hmmm, since you already have that amp, maybe a different amp would be a better choice.
The Deluxe tweed amp will be a different flavor of tone for sure but you may want something completely different.

Impedance is not that critcal. The important thing is to have a speaker plugged in - any speaker.

5E3

Post by angelodp »

I suppose you could put the 5E3 in a head cab, but the beauty of those amps is the totality of the build in the pine combo w/ proper speaker. You could try and get in line over at BrownNote for a Dlite build which many have done here. I am not too sure about delivery dates on those amps these days. The basic Dlite, either the 22/33 or the 44 is a great build and so well mapped out at this stage that you would have lots of support material to draw from. They are complete kits.
